VUHS, Mt. Abe row at LCMM-sponsored meet

BURLINGTON — Rowing teams from Vergennes Union High School won three out of five races on Oct. 6 at the James Wakefield Rescue Row, a series of youth rowing races sponsored in Burlington harbor by the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum.

One-hundred-sixty-seven high- and middle-school rowers from schools from Vermont (including Mount Abraham as well as VUHS), Maine and Massachusetts competed in the Saturday event.

Youth deer-hunting reporting stations announced

MONTPELIER — With youth deer weekend just around the corner, young hunters are encouraged to take to the field to hone their skills and to also help Fish & Wildlife biologists by reporting their deer at one of 24 biological reporting stations around the state.

Youth deer hunting weekend helps ensure that young hunters get the quality training they need for lifelong participation, and it also provides biological information needed to manage the deer population.

Vermont State Police: Drivers ticketed for using handheld devices

ADDISON COUNTY — During the morning commute from 8 to 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 10, troopers from the Vermont State Police’s New Haven barracks conducted a saturation patrol on Route 7 in Ferrisburgh with a focus on identifying people using handheld electronic devices while driving.

KILLINGTON — Killington Resort welcomed some of the world’s strongest obstacle course racers last month to compete in the Spartan Race, which tests the mental and physical strength of athletes with punishing climbs and grueling obstacles including heavy objects to carry, walls to climb and pits of fire to leap over. Covering the entire face of the mountain, the Killington course has long been hailed as the toughest in the entire circuit.

Vermont will need nearly 4,000 nurses by 2020

More than 3,900 nursing-related job vacancies are expected in Vermont between now and spring of 2020, according to a new survey of health care providers.

The survey, conducted by Vermont Talent Pipeline Management, also shows that only 26 percent of those positions are projected to be new jobs. The remainder will be “replacement hires” because of retirements and nurses leaving their jobs.

Water pollution solutions sought

GRAND ISLE — The Lake Champlain Basin Program (LCBP) is seeking proposals for larger projects, ranging from $50,000-$120,000 designed to reduce pollution from the U.S. portion of the watershed for Lake Champlain. In addition, LCBP would like to assist partners in planning for future technical projects utilizing grants up to $50,000. In sum, up to $500,000 will be available for these larger grants.

Utility panel simplifies guidelines for public

MONTPELIER — The Vermont Public Utility Commission has produced three new guides to make it easier for members of the public to participate in the Commission’s regulatory proceedings. They were written in recognition that the Commission’s quasi-judicial proceedings and vocabulary can be difficult for non-lawyers. The pamphlets are available on the Commission’s website.

Two will be available as handouts at public hearings; the third will be provided to non-lawyers who have been granted party status in cases with an evidentiary hearing.
