Green Mt. Club unveils digital map of the Long Trail

VERMONT — The Green Mountain Club has announced that it now offers a complete digital map of the Long Trail. The map is georeferenced, allowing GPS software on cell phones to pinpoint locations as hikers move through the backcountry, where network connections are spotty, if they exist at all.

The digital map also allows users to see exact GPS coordinates at any time, mark places of interest, record GPS tracks, and plot geotagged photos on the maps.

Eight things to know about Lyme disease

Many Vermonters are not aware that Vermont is second in the U.S. for incidence of Lyme disease. According to the Vermont Department of Health, cases of other tick-borne diseases such as Babesiosis and Anaplasmosis are also steadily increasing in Vermont.

VERMONT — An Addison County physician recently received a grant to keep her practicing in Vermont.

HealthFirst, Vermont’s independent practice association, has partnered with the Broughton Fund and the University of Vermont Larner College of Medicine Area Health Education Centers to provide Educational Loan Repayment (ELR) Community Match Grants to HealthFirst member practices seeking to hire new physicians or retain current physicians.

Lawmakers review 2019 session

MONTPELIER — Local lawmakers on Monday recited a stream of successes during the 2019 session that included tapping a funding source for cleanup of the state’s waterways, agreeing on a $6.1 billion budget, banning single-use plastic bags, and passing a measure to ensure lead-free drinking water at public schools.

Summer readers program accepting applications

WATERBURY — the Children’s Literacy Foundation (CLiF) is still accepting applications for its Summer Readers program. The program brings Vermont and New Hampshire authors and storytellers to places where low-income kids spend time in the summer to inspire a love of reading and writing. Each child gets to choose two new books so they will have access to high-quality literature during the summer break.

Vermont State Police Log: NH man cited for hate crime

ADDISON COUNTY — Late last week, Vermont State Police took action against a New Hampshire man who they accused of a hate crime.

On April 23, troopers in the New Haven state police barrack received a report of threatening messages being sent via Facebook by 25-year-old Matthew Howard of Claremont, N.H., to a person in Vermont. Police investigated and determined that Howard sent threatening messages that were maliciously motivated by the victim’s actual or perceived race.

Summer is almost here and festivals, craft fairs, and other outdoor events are popping up everywhere. Many dog owners want to bring their beloved pets along to these events, but it might be a better choice to leave them at home.

While owners are enjoying the attractions, the dogs are being jostled, stepped on, and many are eating dropped people food and trash when their owners are not looking. If it’s really hot outside, imagine how hot the pavement is for your dog, whose feet can be burned. For these reasons many organizers prohibit dogs from the event.

Vermont State Police Log: Cross-border DUI checkpoints

ADDISON COUNTY — This past Saturday night, May 25, Vermont State Police troopers from the New Haven barracks and New York State Police troopers participated in a cross-border DUI Checkpoint initiative to remove impaired drivers from the roadways of Vermont and New York and promote traffic safety. The checkpoints were held between 9 p.m. and midnight in the area of the Lake Champlain Bridge with Vermont troopers on the Addison side of the span and New York troopers on the Crown Point side.

Protesters give legislators an F for climate work

MONTPELIER — Two Middlebury College students and a Montpelier high school student were arraigned in Washington Superior Court late last week on charges stemming from their participation in  a Statehouse protest imploring lawmakers to take action on climate change.
