Vermont author's childhood emotions develop into a book

VERGENNES — When author Ann Braden visited seventh-grade students and advisors at Vergennes Union Middle School on April 5, the Brattleboro resident divulged a secret — her superpower.

The VUMS seventh-grade class had been reading Braden’s book, a debut novel titled, “Benefits of Being an Octopus.” The book was recently nominated for Vermont’s Dorothy Canfield Fisher Book Award list, and was named one of National Public Radio’s best books of the 2018.

ANWSD teacher contract talks stall

VERGENNES — Contract talks between teachers at public schools in the Vergennes area and the board that oversee those schools have broken down.

Sheila Soule, superintendent of the Addison Northwest School District, on Tuesday told the Independent that the ANSWSD Board and the Addison Northwest Teachers’ Association (ANTA) have reached an impasse in their collective bargaining negotiations for a one-year contract that would cover the coming school year. The current teacher contract runs through June 30.

Vergennes Police Log: City police kept busy at Northlands

VERGENNES — Vergennes police were kept busy recently with two calls involving students, and in one case staff, at the Northlands Job Corps federal training center.

First, on April 14 police received a report that several students had been assaulted by two other students as part of a hazing ritual.

Therrien completes Eagle Scout project, benches for Vergennes Residential Care

VERGENNES — Christopher Therrien of the Vergennes Boy Scout Troop 539 completed his Eagle Project by making and donating two benches to the Vergennes Residential Care Home on North Street in Vergennes on April 6. The project was the culmination of months of work by Therrien and his volunteers in seeking material donations, developing plans, organizing the work, and arranging the donation time.

Vergennes Lions selling raffle tickets

VERGENNES — The Vergennes Lions Club is having a very busy spring. In addition to planning for the Annual Vehicle Auction, they are selling raffle tickets to help fund four $1,000 scholarships to graduating VUHS seniors and building accessible ramps for people in need.

The scholarship tickets are $10 each and will result in a 50/50 drawing the middle of May. One person will win half of the value of all tickets sold. Last year, this amounted to about $1,200.

Bixby book sale weekend opens April 26

VERGENNES —There is a fresh look and new additions to the Friends of the Bixby Used Book Sale in Vergennes. The Grand Opening is Friday, April 26, from 3-6 p.m.

“We have so many great books that we would like to get into the hands of readers and interested people,” said Karlene DeVine, president of the Friends. “Our purpose in fundraising is to support the special needs of the Bixby Library. We are advocates of literacy, hence this effort to get more books out into the community.”

Vergennes Police Log: Pot in pocket leads to open-container charges

VERGENNES — Vergennes police on April 11 cited a motorist on Route 7 in Ferrisburgh for having an open container for drugs because the driver of the vehicle had four rolled marijuana cigarettes in a pocket and not in a sealed container.

Vergennes Police Chief George Merkel said the vehicle was stopped for weaving over the highway’s centerline and the driver was checked for driving under the influence of drugs after police smelled the odor of marijuana. Police determined she was not impaired, but found the marijuana on the driver’s person.

Josh Brooks and VUES students win History Day honors

VERGENNES — Vergennes-area students have a long track record of participation and excellence in the annual Vermont History Day competition under the tutelage of two now-retired teachers, Cookie Steponaitis from Vergennes Union High School and Kathy Douglas from Ferrisburgh Central.

But by 2018 only one Addison Northwest School District student, Jarret Muzzy, then a VUHS freshman, placed at the annual competition for middle and high school students.
