City council accepts pool, land; eyes future

VERGENNES — Vergennes aldermen on Tuesday voted unanimously to sign the deed that will give the city ownership of 11.22 acres of land near Vergennes Union High School, land that houses the city’s recreation facilities, including the Vergennes pool.

The land had been owned by the Vergennes ID school board, and the pool had been maintained by a volunteer committee. The city is now taking over that task and has been planning to do so in recent months.

VUES looks to replace old boiler

VERGENNES — Vergennes Union Elementary School officials are looking at spending up to $200,000 this summer to replace one of the school’s boilers and build a new roof on one section of the East Street building.

Addison Northwest Supervisory Union business manager Kathy Cannon said VUES already has $125,000 set aside in a capital fund line item, including $15,000 in its recently approved budget, to help pay for the work.

Departing city planner praised

VERGENNES — Vergennes officials said it was with unusual regret that they accepted the April 13 resignation of Neil Curtis from the city’s planning commission after almost seven years of service, the past three-and-a-half as its chairman.

Curtis, 42, oversaw the first full rewrite of the Vergennes city plan in decades, an effort that consumed most of his tenure, and also served those seven years on the Vergennes Development Review Board.

ANWSU schedules one-board info sessions

VERGENNES — Addison Northwest Supervisory Union officials this week scheduled two more informational meetings for before the petitioned May 11 revotes in Vergennes and Addison of whether ANwSU should change to a one-board governance system.

Members of the ANwSU board will be on hand to answer questions on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Vergennes Union High School library, and on Wednesday, April 28, at 7 p.m. at Addison Central School.

GMP sued over contamination

VERGENNES — The owners of the prominent former Haviland Shade Roller Mill building on the Vergennes falls are suing former owner Green Mountain Power Corp. in U.S. District Court in Burlington for allegedly “fraudulent misrepresentations,” claiming that GMP knew prior to a 2004 sale that the building and site were contaminated by poly-chlorinated byphenyls (PCBs) and other toxic materials.

Court overturns city permit denial, returns issue to DRB

VERGENNES — A long-awaited Environmental Court decision on April 13 overturned a permit denial by the Vergennes Development Review Board, but did not grant permission to the owners of a vacant Grist Mill Island horse barn to renovate it into office space.

In September 2008, the DRB denied an application by Mahaiwe LLC to renovate the 2,100-square-foot barn. Mahaiwe is owned in part by Ferrisburgh’s David Shlansky, also owner of the Grist Mill Island in the Otter Creek falls and the nearby Shade Roller Mill.

Goodrich expanding workforce

VERGENNES — The current workforce at Goodrich Corp.’s Vergennes plant stands at 780, about 20 fewer than a year ago. But if the company’s local hiring plans work out, more workers will soon punch in and out on Panton Road than did in mid-2009, and the workforce could return to where it stood before layoffs began early last year.

Sol Mirelez, marketing communications manager of Goodrich’s Sensors and Integrated Systems division — which includes the Vergennes plant — said the company is now advertising for more help there.

Vergennes eatery gets liquor license after patio debate

VERGENNES — After hearing almost an hour of at times emotional and contradictory testimony, Vergennes aldermen voted, 4-0, to grant The Antidote a liquor license that includes the right to serve alcohol on its small rear patio until 11 p.m.

Two neighbors of The Antidote, a city restaurant, have attended the past two council meetings to say they are upset by allegedly persistent noise from the patio at the back of the building, which lies at the intersection of School and Green streets and borders a residential neighborhood.

One-board up for re-vote on May 11

VERGENNES — Vergennes and Addison residents will decide on Tuesday, May 11, whether to change their minds on supporting unification of the Addison Northwest Supervisory Union under one-board governance.

Both towns joined Ferrisburgh, Panton and Waltham in voting by wide margins on March 2 to back the switch, but Vergennes and Addison petitioners successfully requested second votes.
