Vergennes adopts drug paraphernalia ordinance

VERGENNES — Vergennes aldermen on Feb. 8 unanimously adopted a city ordinance that allows Vergennes police to write civil tickets for the possession of drug paraphernalia.

Unless a petition arises to challenge the law within 44 days from the date of adoption, it will take effect 60 days from this past Tuesday.

Vergennes police will be able to issue a $100 ticket to anyone found in possession of equipment used to inhale, ingest, produce or cultivate illegal drugs.

Bixby seeking new approach to town funding

VERGENNES — On March 1, residents of Addison, Ferrisburgh, Panton and Waltham will be offered a choice on how their towns will in the future fund the Bixby Free Memorial Library.

The Vergennes library, which serves the four towns as well as its host city, has always been listed on the Town Meeting Day ballot in each community as a charitable entity making a specific funding request — except in Vergennes, where aldermen have always included the library in their budget.

ANwSU posts information on unification

VERGENNES — Voters in the five Addison Northwest Supervisory Union towns who want to learn more about the proposed unification of ANwSU governance under one board have a number of ways to do so before March 1 voting in each town.

ANwSU officials have scheduled one more informational forum devoted solely to unification — at the Addison Central School on Tuesday, Feb. 8, at 7 p.m.

ANwSU Superintendent Tom O’Brien also said unification questions will be welcome at school meetings in Addison and Ferrisburgh and at the annual meetings for Vergennes Union high and elementary schools.

Alderwoman bows out; Addison races loom

VERGENNES — Few races for elective office in March are shaping up in the five-town Vergennes area, but the Little City will have one new alderman, while a persistent Addison critic of Addison Northwest Supervisory Union unification is seeking two seats on school boards, including on the one panel that would govern ANwSU if that measure is approved.

The new member of the Vergennes City Council will replace two-term incumbent Christine Collette, who opted to step down for what she called four good reasons — that’s the number of grandchildren she has.

String of burglaries end with bust

VERGENNES — Vergennes police, with the help of three other agencies and two tips, on Monday cited a Rutland man and a Vergennes woman in connection with a string of six home burglaries committed in the city between late December and Jan. 18.

On Monday, Nicholas C. Moretti, 36, of Rutland was cited for the six burglaries. The citations were served on him at Addison District Court, where he was already being arraigned on outstanding warrants for burglary, assault on a correctional officer, petit larceny and unlawful mischief.

ANwSU meets Challenge

VERGENNES — With the Addison Central School (ACS) board’s Thursday adoption of a $1.71 million budget for voter approval in March, it became official that 2011-2012 spending at all four Addison Northwest Supervisory Union Schools will drop.

The ACS spending plan calls for a 5.07 percent decrease. Earlier in the week, the Vergennes Union Elementary School board adopted a proposed $3.89 million budget that would lower spending by 0.10 percent.

VUHS board again backs decreased spending

VERGENNES — Vergennes Union High School board members have adopted a 2011-2012 budget for Town Meeting Day approval that would drop spending from the current level by almost $94,000, or 1.06 percent.

Their $8.8 million proposal is the second in two years that would drop spending. The current year’s spending plan of about $8.9 million came in almost $11,000 lower than the previous year’s.

Aldermen cool to new commission

VERGENNES — Members of the Vergennes City Council at their Jan. 11 meeting said they were skeptical of the possible creation of a Vergennes conservation commission, which some said might create an unwanted layer of bureaucracy.

However, the municipal plan aldermen adopted in September 2009 calls for one to be established.

City Council, Boys and Girls Club discusses future of land

VERGENNES — At a Jan. 11 City Council meeting, aldermen, City Manager Mel Hawley and Boys & Girls Club of Greater Vergennes board member Bill Benton together discussed the city-owned 8.13-acre parcel that lies behind homes on the east side of New Haven Road.

The Vergennes ID School District deeded that land to the city last year when that board dissolved. The youth club board remains interested in some of the land, which is near city schools and recreation facilities, as a potential site for a permanent headquarters and clubhouse.

Latest set of ANwSU unification public forums begin on Tuesday

VERGENNES — The first of five forums on Addison Northwest Supervisory Union unification under one-board governance will be held on Tuesday at Vergennes Union High School.

The meeting on the proposal to operate the four ANwSU schools under one 12-member board will begin at 6:30 p.m. and run for a scheduled 90 minutes.

The five ANwSU towns will vote on unification on Town Meeting Day. All five towns must vote yes if the change is to be adopted.
