Vergennes officials and residents began the year understanding a replacement would have to be found for longtime City Manager Mel Hawley.

They didn’t know how difficult that task would prove to be, even with a full year’s notice — or that two other civic leaders would unexpectedly step down.

The first surprise in a year full or them came in early February, when two-time Vergennes Mayor Michael Daniels resigned, alleging in a statement that he had a poor working relationship with the Vergennes City Council.

Vergennes Police Log: City police coordinate county-wide traffic-control effort

VERGENNES — A widespread Saturday, Dec. 29, traffic control effort coordinated by the Vergennes Police Department and including 10 Bristol, Vermont State and Vergennes police officers resulted in 34 traffic tickets and 19 written warnings, according to Vergennes Police Chief George Merkel.

The patrols were funded by the grant recently awarded to the city department by the Governor’s Highway Safety Council, funding intended to enhance traffic safety around Addison County.

In Vergennes and Brandon, unseasonable rain caused wastewater overflows

VERGENNES — Unseasonable rain that fell in Vermont during the weekend before Christmas led to the release of more than 2 million gallons of untreated and partially treated wastewater into rivers around the state.

Brandon, Montpelier, Rutland, St. Albans and Vergennes all reported combined sewer overflows to the state’s Department of Environmental Conservation. St. Albans also released more than a half million gallons of partially treated wastewater and stormwater. By law, Vermont municipalities are now required to submit public alerts of untreated releases.

Vergennes Opera House gets new efficient lighting

VERGENNES — The board and officers of the non-profit Friends of the Vergennes Opera House recently announced the completion of a $15,000 installation of a new energy efficient lighting system at the Main Street hall.

The project consisted of 17 new LED downlights and 14 new LED exit signs.

Vergennes plans to extend downtown parking limits

VERGENNES — Vergennes-area residents and visitors to the city’s downtown should soon have more time to run errands, shop and dine with less worry of finding a paper ticket tucked under their windshield wipers indicating a $10 fine.

At the Vergennes City Council’s request, Vergennes City Manager Matt Chabot is preparing an amendment to the city’s parking ordinance that would extend from two hours to three hours the legal daytime limit to remain in a downtown parking space. Neither the current nor expected new limit applies to evenings or Sundays.

'Age Well' will debut tai chi classes Jan. 14

VERGENNES — Age Well is sponsoring tai chi classes in Vergennes beginning Jan. 14 andrunning through April 10. Tai chi is a discipline that gets you moving, helps reduce stress and hypertension, builds strength, improves balance and promotes mental clarity and mindfulness.

Some of the classes will take place on Mondays and Wednesdays:

Vergennes Police Log: Authorities investigate graffiti incident at city skate park

VERGENNES — Vergennes police are investigating a Dec. 21 incident of racist, sexist and anti-Semitic graffiti at the city’s skate park off East Street.

Police Chief George Merkel said a vandal or vandals applied offensive language and images, some of them graphic, to several structures at the park. The park is in the middle of the East Street Vergennes recreation area near Vergennes Union Elementary School and includes the ice-skating rink/tennis courts, basketball hoops and city pool.

Merkel said town workers have covered the words and images.

New contract keeps Vergennes recycling viable

VERGENNES — The Vergennes recycling center will be staying open to serve all residents in the region, and starting on Jan. 2 it will offer expanded services, according to Vergennes City Manager Matt Chabot.

Chabot said the city has awarded R&L Rubbish of Middlebury an “itinerant vendor’s license” to do business for one year at the city’s Canal Street recycling center.

Vergennes Police Log: Traffic stops land drivers with serious citations

VERGENNES — The continuing efforts by Vergennes police to crack down on traffic violations also netted a more serious offense last week.

During one of the special directed patrols the city department has been running to combat speeding and other traffic offenses, police on Saturday, Dec. 15, cited Amanda Nichols, 26, of Vergennes for driving with a criminally suspended license. Police stopped Nichols’ vehicle because they alleged she failed to yield at a stop sign, and they also cited her for that offense.

Lions will collect Toys for Kids in Vergennes

VERGENNES — The Vergennes Lions Club is collecting Toys for Kids to be distributed to needy families in the Vergennes and Bristol area. Collection barrels are located at A & D Automotive, Dollar General, Jackman Fuels-Vergennes, Kinney Drugs-Vergennes, Long Trail on the Falls Physical Therapy, One Credit Union and Sheer Cuts.
