City council mulls funding source, site for police station

VERGENNES — Vergennes aldermen on Tuesday took another step toward a new police station, and heard for the first time a suggestion on how to pay for it without raising taxes.

Aldermen unanimously voted to ask City Manager Mel Hawley to study building a new station on city-owned land off Green Street, and they heard Hawley cite the Tower Fund as a way to pay for it.

Gas firm pitches to city council

VERGENNES — Vergennes aldermen on Tuesday heard Vermont Gas Systems officials tout the potential benefits to city residents and businesses of a natural gas pipeline that the company hopes by 2015 to extend from Chittenden County to Addison County.

The preliminary path along Route 7 would allow Vermont Gas to serve the densely populated areas of Vergennes, said company President and CEO Don Gilbert.

Northlands students use new skill to help Japan

VERGENNES — A connection made after one of the worst March snowstorms in Vermont history is the key to a Northlands Job Corps student project that is sending aid to Japan after one the worst natural disasters in its history.

A Northlands club that goes by the name Ladies of Success — it is essentially a mutual-support and social-activity group for a small number of female students on the Vergennes campus  — spearheaded a campus-wide student effort to make more than 1,000 paper origami cranes.

City OKs farmers' market despite concern

VERGENNES — Vergennes aldermen at their April 12 meeting approved the city’s farmers’ market request to use the downtown green for another season, but not without some discussion triggered by the proposed inclusion of a pizza maker among the market’s vendors.

City Manager Mel Hawley first raised the issue that such a vendor might conflict with existing downtown eateries.

Vergennes eyes land for police

VERGENNES — Vergennes aldermen at their April 12 meeting said they would like to retain the better of two building sites on a city-owned 8.13-acre parcel off New Haven Road as a possible future home for a new police station.

The Boys & Girls Club of Greater Vergennes has also been interested in the parcel, which was owned by the Vergennes ID school district and deeded to the city in 2010 when the ID board was dissolved per a citywide vote.

Paving reductions help Vergennes meet budget target

VERGENNES — Despite a winter that challenged the Vergennes Public Works Department and increased demand for the services of the Vergennes Police Department, the city’s budget appears to be on track as the June 30 end of the fiscal year approaches.

City Manager Mel Hawley said in an interview last Thursday that a combination of belt-tightening and better-than-expected revenue streams put the city’s finances in a better position than he had hoped even a few short weeks before.

Vergennes to televise May unification forum

VERGENNES — In scheduling a televised public forum in advance of the city’s May 17 revote on Addison Northwest Supervisory Union unification, Vergennes aldermen and an ANwSU representative agreed on Tuesday that the school district should make a full presentation describing what the school governance change would mean.

The forum will be held at 7 p.m. on May 10 in the Vergennes Opera House. It will then be broadcast locally on cable channel 17 on Wednesday, May 11, at 1 and 7 p.m.; on Friday, May 13, at 8 p.m.; and on Sunday, May 15, at 3 p.m.

Addison to revote on board unification

VERGENNES — Addison residents will be joining Vergennes citizens in voting for a second time this year on proposed one-board governance for the Addison Northwest Supervisory Union.

Residents in both those communities on Town Meeting Day backed a proposal for one board to own and operate the four ANwSU schools, but now will reconsider that support in a second vote.

If the Unified Union (UU) proposal survives both upcoming revotes, it would be the first significant consolidation move in Vermont.

Vergennes teen honored as 2011 Youth of the Year

VERGENNES — Like many 15-year-olds, Vergennes Union High School sophomore Kaitlin Leroux-Eastman listens to hip-hop, loves to hang around with her buddies, and enjoys the Twilight book series.

But probably not too many of the Vergennes resident’s peers match her nearly 200 hours of community service in the past year, conduct a church choir, and already have mapped out their college choice — St. Michael’s — and career plans — teaching music or French.

Vergennes to make switch to quarterly sewer billing

VERGENNES — The city of Vergennes will change how it sends out sewer bills. In the upcoming fiscal year, homeowners will receive their sewer bills quarterly along with their tax bills.

Aldermen at a March 22 meeting agreed with City Manager Mel Hawley and City Clerk Joan Devine that such a change in when bills are sent would be more efficient and save the city money in the long run. They also said that for most homeowners it would be easier to make quarterly payments of $87.50 rather than two semi-annual payments of $175.
