City reveals more info about proposed police station

VERGENNES — Vergennes aldermen at a Tuesday public information meeting at the city fire station released for the first time purchase price details of their proposed North Main Street site for a new police station, and they updated funding plans for what is estimated as a $1.75 million project.  

They told a gathering of about two-dozen residents, plus Police Chief George Merkel and several members of his department, that the chosen parcel could cost up to $259,000.

Vergennes gears up for Saturday's Holiday Stroll

VERGENNES — The Little City of Vergennes will be in full holiday spirit at the annual Holiday Stroll this Saturday, Dec. 1. Participants will enjoy a festive collection of activities ranging from a breakfast with Santa Claus at the VUHS cafeteria to the annual Winter Craft Fair at Vergennes Union Elementary School, to a stroll down Main Street ringing bells and singing songs with Santa and his elves.

VUHS board to decide on bond at Dec. 10 meeting

VERGENNES — The Vergennes Union High School board will meet on Dec. 10 to create a new bond proposal for voter approval, said board chairwoman Kristin Bristow on Wednesday.

Bristow spoke the morning after the board met for two hours in front of about 10 residents to discuss its options after its initial $6.5 million proposal to pay for needed repairs and major upgrades to the school and grounds lost on Election Day, by a tally of 2,244-1,653.

VUHS board to discuss bond, budget on Tuesday evening

VERGENNES — The Vergennes Union High School board will meet in the school this Tuesday at 6 p.m. to discuss its next step after the Election Day defeat of its $6.5 million bond proposal. Addison Northwest Supervisory Union voters on Nov. 6 by 2,244-1,653 rejected a bond that would have funded repairs and major upgrades to VUHS.

According to the warning for the Nov. 20 meeting, it will be a work session that will focus on efforts to craft next year’s budget and to “revise the proposed Facilities Repairs/Improvement Bond.”

Vergennes EMTs, ambulance provide relief on New Jersey shore

VERGENNES — At 6 p.m. on Nov. 6, one week after Superstorm Sandy devastated long stretches of the Eastern seaboard, a convoy of seven Vermont ambulance crews left the Green Mountain State bound for New Jersey.

The convoy, which included personnel from Vergennes Area Rescue Squad (VARS), responded to a call made in anticipation of a second storm, which on Nov. 7 hit stretches of coast already crippled by the hurricane with more wind, rain and snow.

Some towns in New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts lost power for a second time.

City picks North Main Street site for police station

VERGENNES — Vergennes aldermen on Tuesday revealed a 0.6-acre North Main Street parcel that is the former home of Vergennes Auto Sales as their choice on which to build a new station for the city’s police department.

Vergennes officials said they have discussed purchasing the land with its owner, but discussed details Tuesday only behind closed doors at the end of their open session.

City seeks feedback on recreation options

VERGENNES — Vergennes aldermen at their Nov. 13 meeting urged residents of the city and surrounding towns to fill out a survey that focuses largely on the city’s current and potential recreation offerings.

Mayor Michael Daniels and City Manager Mel Hawley said the survey would not only give city and partnership officials guidance on what to focus upon in improving recreation in Vergennes, but also that the results would support efforts to obtain grant funding to meet that goal.

Students honor local veterans with program in Vergennes

VERGENNES — Champlain Valley Christian School students in Vergennes recently honored 26 veterans during the school’s sixth annual Veterans Day program on Friday, Nov. 9. The morning began with a breakfast served by volunteer parents, and was followed with student presentations that included songs and poems. Each veteran was presented with a certificate and a gift from the students to show the school’s appreciation for their sacrifice and time of service.

VUHS honors long-serving employees

VERGENNES — A happy accident in a Vergennes Union High School hallway led to a gathering in the school library that on Nov. 2 united and honored dozens of current and former long-term VUHS staff members.

All, from food service workers to foreign language teachers, had worked at VUHS for at least 15 years, under the terms set out on the Ray E. Davison Tribute plaque — which school librarian and media specialist Chris Brady recently found by chance.
