BRISTOL — Saturday, March 3, saw scores of Starksboro residents assemble at their local elementary school for their annual town meeting.

Among the guests were Rep. Dave Sharpe, Rep. Fred Baser and Sen. Chris Bray. One after the other, they went up to the microphone to deliver their reports on goings-on in Montpelier.

Sharpe, the last of the lawmakers to speak, delivered some news that caught everyone by surprise:

“I won’t be seeking re-election.”

Even Sharpe’s legislative colleagues were caught unaware.

Voters reject Mount Abe bond for third time; new approaches sought

Posted on March 8, 2018 |
By Christopher Ross

ADDISON COUNTY — After voters in the Addison Northeast Supervisory Union on Tuesday defeated a $29.5 million bond for the renovation of Mount Abraham Middle/High School, 1,785–1,196, the pressing question is, “What now?”

The bond’s defeat for the third time most likely delays any construction until at least 2020, pending the ability of the 5-town community to agree on a building project, vote for a bond and start the design phase.

Cheryl Estey was re-elected as town clerk and Stephen Rooney was reelected to the Mount Abraham Unified School District board — both for three-year terms.

A total of 415 residents went to the polls on Tuesday, about 31 percent of total registered voters.

BRISTOL — Residents of Mount Abe Unified School District will try for a third time to pass a bond vote to renovate the aging middle-and-high school facility on March 6, Town Meeting Day. Changing demographics prompt question: What does Mount Abe’s future hold?

Posted on February 22, 2018 |
By Charlie Mitchell

MtAbe0444.jpg

BRISTOL — In 15 years, the student population at Mount Abraham Union High School has dropped 33 percent, from almost 1,000 students to 639. That drop in student numbers is part of the reason that the per capita cost of education per pupil has risen so dramatically over that same period.

Will that trend continue? Not necessarily, but the jury is out.

BRISTOL — Five-town voters on March 6 will cast ballots on a 2018-2019 public school spending plan for Addison Northeast that would result in a 1 percent increase in equalized per-pupil spending and spur some significant staffing changes within the newly created Mount Abraham Unified School District (MAUSD).

The proposed MAUSD budget reflects $24,746,279 in education spending to operate Mount Abraham Union middle and high schools; the elementary schools in Bristol, Lincoln, Monkton, New Haven and Starksboro; and the Addison Northeast central office.

Ode to Lab Lily cmyk .jpg

Editor’s note: Lawrence Jones of South Starksboro wrote this piece about Chris Marion’s black Lab “Lilly.”

I am no stranger to death. I have buried many people and honored more in services dedicated to their memories. I have sat with those in their last moments. I have hugged many four-footed companions as they drifted off to sleep, never to reawaken in this world.
