Starksboro: U.S. Census numbers appear to be off

STARKSBORO — Starksboro selectmen are skeptical about U.S. Census results that show a population drop in their town, and they plan to contact Census officials to question the data.

According to the 2010 Census, Starksboro’s population is 1,787, down 121 from the 2000 number of 1,898.

But according to Town Clerk Cheryl Estey, the town’s voter checklist increased by 257 in the same decade, from 986 to 1,243.

“I was actually flabbergasted when I saw the (Census) numbers,” Estey said.

Teacher pleads guilty to possession of child porn

RUTLAND — Former elementary school teacher Will Parini, 29, of Starksboro pleaded guilty to possession of child pornography last Thursday at the U.S. District Court in Rutland.

An FBI investigation, which stemmed from an investigation in Texas, led to Parini’s arrest in March. He was charged with possession and distribution of child pornography. At the time he was a music teacher at Bristol Elementary School and Robinson Elementary School in Starksboro.

Teacher to plead guilty in child porn case

Starksboro family of four loses their home to fire

STARKSBORO — A Starksboro family is coping in the wake of the loss of their home to a fire on Monday, Sept. 19.

Eric Cota, a longtime employee of the Bristol Road Department and a volunteer firefighter, his wife Catina and their two children, Matthew and Jordyn, were not injured in the fire, but the family lost their two dogs, Rascal and Sheba, to the blaze.

Starksboro project tests feasibility of solar power

STARKSBORO — In October of 2010, the town of Starksboro took major steps to revamp its energy portfolio by installing 25 solar power arrays mounted on trackers on 1.5 acres of land adjacent to Robinson Elementary School.

From the outset, one of the main goals of this project was to net zero energy consumption for the school and town buildings. Put another way, town and school officials sought to produce as much energy using solar as they drew from the electric power grid in the course of a year.

Librarian retiring from Robinson Elementary

STARKSBORO — Robinson Elementary School librarian Ann Watson will retire earlier than she expected this year due to budget cuts. After 30 years working as a librarian in Addison County schools — first at Mary Hogan Elementary School in Middlebury for four and a half years and then at Robinson for 26 years — she will leave because her position will be reduced next year from three days a week to two half-days a week.

Starksboro aims to expand solar knowledge

STARKSBORO — The Vermont Clean Energy Action Network, in conjunction with the Vermont Natural Resources Council, recently awarded the Starksboro Town Energy Committee a $1,600 grant to improve renewable energy education resources and create websites for the 19 solar trackers powering Robinson Elementary School and the six trackers feeding the town offices.

STARKSBORO — This past weekend’s bright blue skies gave a burst of solar energy to Starksboro’s Common Ground Center, where a collection of world-renowned environmentalists, local residents and renewable energy developers congregated on Saturday to celebrate the grand opening of the nonprofit’s handicap accessible Eco-Lodge. Generating electricity from eight solar panels that track the sun and deriving hot water and heat from solar hot water heaters, the lodge also takes ecologic strides by using recycled and on-site harvested materials.

Starksboro music teacher implicated in child porn case

STARKSBORO — Elementary school teacher, private guitar tutor and local musician Will J. Parini, 28, of Starksboro was arrested last Thursday, March 17, on a federal charge for one count of distributing child pornography. The arrest came exactly one week after the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) executed a court-authorized search warrant for Parini’s Route 116 home in Starksboro.
