Lindholm Sports Column: Marco ... Scutaro: The Giants win the World Series

This past Sunday night Marco Scutaro knocked in the winning run for the San Francisco Giants in the deciding game of the World Series. Before that, he was the MVP of the National League Championship Series with a .500 batting average and a lot of big hits.

Why can’t the Red Sox get a player like that?

Oh yes, we had him for two years before banishing him to Colorado this past offseason.

Marco joined other diminutive second basemen, Bobby Richardson and Bill Mazeroski, as World Series heroes.

Sports column: Time ripe for four divisions in Vermont football

In the coming weeks, Vermont football officials will gather and decide how to align divisions for the state’s 34 football-playing high schools.

Currently, there are three divisions, with 14 schools in D-I and 10 apiece in D-II and D-III. That alignment has been in place since 2011.

In 2009 and 2010, there were 10 teams in D-I and 12 apiece in D-II and D-III.

By the time my nephew Michael was 13 years old, he was not only tying his own flies but was selling them to a local fly-fishing store. These were functional flies; they were tied with the intention of being used to catch fish. But Michael was an artist. He took great pride in his work. He subscribed to a magazine devoted not to fly-fishing but just to the tying of flies.

Sports Column: New fishing platform is a boon for all

Anyone driving up Lincoln Road along the New Haven River from Bristol to West Lincoln in the past few weeks is sure to have noticed a new structure hanging over the water at Eagle Park. Indeed, over the past several months regular commuters have seen the entire project slowly take shape, including the grading and construction of a ramp leading from a parking lot down toward a bend in the river, and then eventually the appearance of a sturdy new platform and railings along with some attractive landscaping.

Karl Lindholm: From the Panthers to the Orioles

Middlebury College senior Mike Joseph loves baseball — and now he has a shot, a long shot perhaps, to embark on a career in baseball, having signed a contract in August with the Baltimore Orioles.

As you read this, Mike is in Sarasota, training and competing for a month (15 games) in the Florida Instructional League. He’s the first Panther to join a Major League organization since the early 1950s.

I always loved thunderstorms as a child. My favorite place to watch them was lakeside on vacations in Maine. I still enjoy a good thunderstorm now and then. But since the flood of 1998 — and since I moved into a house on the side of a hill in the middle of the woods — my feelings have changed.

NFL owners are out of bounds in referee lockout

Y’know, it’s already harder and harder to get excited about each new NFL season as more information steadily comes out about how inherently dangerous the sport, notably at the professional level, is to the human brain.

And now we have the owner-imposed referee lockout to dampen enthusiasm even further.

It’s really difficult to root for a sport that is owned and operated by some of the meanest people who walk the face of the earth.
