Matt Dickerson: The Pi Day blizzard of 2017, an ode

Posted on April 6, 2017 |
By Matt Dickerson

The last weekend in March I went cross-country skiing at Rikert Nordic Center for what I thought at the time was almost certainly the final time of the 2016-17 winter. A month or so earlier I had gone skiing and feared it was my final ski of the winter. But then came the Pi Day Blizzard of 2017 — the glorious, delightful and beautiful Pi Day Blizzard, also known as Category 3 Winter Storm Stella.

Karl Lindholm, Hoop excellence: Keeping it in the family

Point.

The Point: the tip of the spear, the sharp end of a tool or weapon.

Point Guard: in basketball, the player initiating the attack on the other team.

Senior Jake Brown was the point guard this year on the Middlebury College men’s basketball team: He was the point of the Panther attack, and he indeed ran the team, which finished with 27 wins and just four losses and was ranked fourth in the country (of 437 Division III college teams!).

Gregory Dennis: Hoop and snow dreams mingle

Posted on March 23, 2017 |
By Gregory Dennis

It’s been another lousy year to be an Eastern skier. And another great year to be a fan of Middlebury College men’s basketball.

There’s little mystery about what’s happening to Vermont skiing. It used to be we’d have a lot of 30-degree days with snow. Now we have a lot of 35-degree days with rain.

Blame it on climate change. And expect it to get worse over time.

Back in the last century, we could always count on a January thaw of a couple days.

Andy Kirkaldy: Results in final games do not define seasons

Posted on March 16, 2017 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

After a day at the Middlebury College sports complex like Saturday it’s easy to ask what went wrong.

The day dawned with such promise. Both the Panther women’s hockey and men’s basketball teams were hosting foes in NCAA Division III quarterfinals they had defeated in their most recent meetings.

Karl Lindholm: Walking the course, making friends — Links Golf

Posted on March 1, 2017 |

Karl Lindholm column Humphrey & caddy.jpg

In Hemingway’s classic “The Sun Also Rises,” Montoya, the Spanish innkeeper, exempts protagonist Jake Barnes from the contempt he feels for Jake’s hedonistic group of American friends.

Why? Because he has aficion.

Gregg Humphrey is an aficionado, not of the bullfight like Barnes, but of golf. He has a passion for golf.

Matt Dickerson: Thoughts on snow, skiing and love

My wife, Deborah, and I celebrated St. Valentine’s Day last week by going cross-country skiing together up at the Rikert Nordic Center in Ripton. It was our 29th Valentine’s Day since we got married, and our 30th together counting the February when we were engaged and planning our wedding.

Andy Kirkaldy: Appreciate this, Boston backers

Posted on February 16, 2017 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

I tell my daughters all the time they are spoiled.

We didn’t raise them to root for Boston professional sports teams, even though both Kristine and I grew up rooting for them, in her case especially the Bruins on Channel 38, the local UHF station back in the day when Orr and Esposito helped the Bs win a couple of Stanley Cups.

Karl Lindholm: 'Fences' shows how 'deprivation of possibility' mars a game and its players

Posted on February 1, 2017 |
By Karl Lindholm

“Ain’t but two men ever played baseball as good as you. That’s Babe Ruth and Josh Gibson.”

That’s Jim Bono, the best friend of Troy Maxson, the protagonist of August Wilson’s play “Fences” referring to Troy’s stature in baseball’s Negro leagues.

“Fences” is set in 1957 when Troy was 53 years old, 10 years after Jackie Robinson’s integration of baseball at its highest level, after 60 years excluding black athletes.
