Karl Lindholm: A most unforgettable character: Coach Alaimo

Posted on July 5, 2018 |
By Karl Lindholm

In the middle of a practice scrimmage, the coach blew a shrill whistle and gathered his minions around him at mid-court. He exhorted his boys to play with greater abandon: “Every loose ball has to be ours. Get on the floor!”

He then instructed one of us with a ball (it might have been me!) to roll it on the floor and he proceeded to demonstrate. He dove on the rolling basketball … and broke his wrist.

Matt Dickerson: Important goals when fishing with friends

Posted on June 28, 2018 |
By Matt Dickerson

Dickerson, Matt ONLINE.jpg

This past week I had a chance to take two friends fly fishing. When I take somebody fishing, especially somebody new to the sport, I have multiple goals. I want to be safe. I want to practice and model good conservation ethic while enjoying the outdoors. I want to teach something about fly fishing, including both the mechanics of fly casting and also the strategies for reading a river. Most importantly, I want to enjoy company with friends.

I also want my guests to catch fish. The last point isn’t necessary for the enjoyable time, but it does help.

Andy Kirkaldy: World Cup looks to be wide open; time for Spain

Posted on June 21, 2018 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

Kirkaldy, Andy ONLINE.jpg

This is a football column. No, not what we in the USA call football. Those who want to discuss whether the Giants should sign Odell Beckham Jr., whatever the heck Ben Roethlisberger was saying about his contract this weekend, or why the Patriots drafted a running back in the first round should look elsewhere, at least for today.

Because it’s time for the Copa Mundial de Futbol, the Coupe du Monde de Football, the World Cup of Football.

Matt Dickerson: Acadia National Park 3: The Gorham Loop

Posted on June 14, 2018 |
By Matt Dickerson

gorham-hike - 3.jpg

We pulled off the famous Loop Road to park at the trailhead to hike the Gorham Mountain Loop trail. Or, rather, we tried to park. Unfortunately, Memorial Day weekend had turned Acadia National Park into Acadia National Park-ing Lot. Not only did we find every lot full, but the right lane of the one-way, two-lane Loop Road had also been turned into additional parking, and for more than a mile in each direction every foot of pavement was taken by a car.

Karl Lindholm: A calm place in a world of flux – Bill McKibben and the Red Sox

McKibben poor people campaign VTdigger_0527.jpg

Who’s that tall slender fellow in the Red Sox hat?

Why, it’s Bill McKibben of Ripton, the environmental activist and writer, back home after five weeks in Australia, New Zealand, Japan, the Pacific Islands, Canada and California, fighting coal mines and working for fossil fuel divestment.

Bill McKibben, baseball fan.

Matt Dickerson: Acadia part 2: Of salters, alewives and estuaries

Posted on May 31, 2018 |
By Matt Dickerson

Dickerson, Matt ONLINE.jpg

We parked the Outback at a little dirt pull-off by a highway bridge. Based on several different guides and personal recommendations, this tidal marsh was high on my list of paddling destinations during my three-week residency at Acadia National Park, and the bridge at the outlet of the marsh where it flowed out into a harbor was the recommended put-in. My wife and I arrived about three hours before high tide in hopes of riding the incoming tide all the way upriver to the very start of the marsh — the estuary where several cold water streams flowed into the brackish saltwater.

Andy Kirkaldy: Teams warming up with approach of postseason

Posted on May 24, 2018 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

Kirkaldy, Andy ONLINE.jpg

Spring has finally arrived, and many of the local high school teams are making up for earlier games lost to rain, snow and soaked fields with packed schedules. Middlebury girls’ lacrosse, for example, had eight games stuffed in between May 10 and 25, while their Vergennes-Mount Abraham girls’ lax peers had 10 games crammed in between May 8 and 24.

Well, that’s one way to tune up for the playoffs, which will begin next week after the athletes catch their breath over the Memorial Day weekend.

Matt Dickerson: Acadia National Park from a lightweight canoe

Matt Dickerson col Acadia canoing cmyk8433.jpg

“We should have done this 10 years ago.”

That was the day’s refrain. The third of four times my wife, Deborah, or I repeated it was the third or fourth times we lifted our new ultralight Wenonah kevlar canoe off of or onto the roof of our car, with barely more effort than it takes to lift a mug of coffee to our lips.

Karl Lindholm: Many pitchers could, and can, also wield bats

Posted on May 3, 2018 |
By Karl Lindholm

shohei.jpg

By the way, who decreed that pitchers can’t hit?

From little League through high school, the most athletic player is often the pitcher — and the best hitter, batting cleanup.

Yet at the professional level, and even in college baseball, pitchers are relegated to specialist duty, never carrying a bat to the plate and taking their licks. Pitchers sit while a designated player hits in their turn.

In the Major Leagues, the National League is the outlier, still allowing pitchers to hit for themselves (most often ineptly).

Matt Dickerson: Fishing for No. 31 in 401

Dickerson, Matt ONLINE.jpg

There’s an old saying I just made up. It goes like this: “Don’t count your stories before they hatch.”

I began incubating this story a couple weeks ago. I imagined how it would unfold, and how I might tell it. I even wrote a few paragraphs in my head. It had a pleasant and even slightly surprising beginning, and I definitely liked the imagined ending.
