Four things to do in a winter without snow

So it’s winter, and you can’t get your fix of fishing. This is a problem for Vermont anglers every winter, but this year it’s particularly acute because all the outdoor things you do in the winter when you can’t fish require snow. And, as you may have noticed, there isn’t any. Not only is there no snow, but as I write this column it is 46 degrees outside and the long-range forecast offers no promise of significant snowfall in the next 10 days.

After weeks of hype and hours of analysis, they will play the game

Apparently there will be football played on Sunday, at least intermittently between breaks for high-concept commercials and lip-synching by a singer better known at this point for cosmetic surgery.

Pennsylvania still believes in Coach Paterno

As far as I could ever tell, during my formative years growing up in Pittsburgh, Pa., the only thing that ever did tie the two sides of the state together was Joe Paterno.

Glory Years: Middlebury basketball

The glory years of Middlebury College men’s basketball are right now.

This year’s Panther team is 15-0 after their win Tuesday night and ranked number one in the country in Division III.

Under Coach Jeff Brown, Middlebury has earned a berth in the NCAA post-season tournament for the last four years, making it all the way to the final four last April before losing by two points to the eventual national champions from St. Thomas, Minn.

It is winter (despite the lack of snow). Although a few Vermont rivers are now open year round for catch-and-release fishing, most are closed. And even those that are legally open, such as the lower sections of Lewis and Otter creeks, on most winter days are not especially productive.

Crystal ball looks ahead; mileage typically varies

It’s written in the Official Manual for Sports Writing that predictions must be made. That’s Rule 1.

Rule 2? Once made, said prognostication must be quickly forgotten unless it miraculously proves correct.

Did I mention that I once accurately made the preseason prediction that the Kansas City Royals would win the 1985 World Series? Hey, thanks to Don Denkinger’s historically bad umpiring call (Jorge Orta safe at first in the 9th inning of Game 6 vs. the Cardinals) I was right.

New Year's thoughts from New York City

“It was dark. Very dark,” Isreal Dudley recalls, thinking back almost 10 years to his first visit to Vermont. He was 11 years old at the time, and it was his first real taste of the rural outdoors. Thanks to the Fresh Air Fund, Isreal, also called “Isszy,” had come to spend a couple weeks with our family that summer. It wasn’t his first time out of Brooklyn, the borough of New York City where he had grown up and lived his whole life. The previous year he had spent some time with a family in Pennsylvania, also through the FAF.

He's getting a kick out of an NFL player

In pro football this year I follow closely the fortunes of the Patriots — and the Seattle Seahawks.

I try never to miss a Seahawks’ game. My favorite player is a Seahawk.

I am absorbed every week by the performance of the Middlebury College graduate who is playing a crucial role for the Seattle team.

Steve Hauschka, Middlebury 2007, is the placekicker for Seattle and is having an outstanding season. He has converted 22 of 26 field goal attempts (two over 50 yards) and all 30 of his extra points.

Fall brought success in many ways

When the echo of the final whistle faded this past fall, only one local high school team won its last game or race — the Middlebury Union field hockey squad that derailed the South Burlington express in the Division I final.

Of course, winning a championship by definition equals success. The victors jump for joy and hug and smile and talk about chemistry and game-winning goals and hard work paying off.
