MacIntire honored posthumously

Posted on September 13, 2010 |

SHOREHAM —Wilson MacIntire is gone but far from forgotten in his hometown of Shoreham, a community that last week conferred two posthumous honors upon one of its foremost civic volunteers.

Town selectmen confirmed the two tennis courts located behind the local elementary school will henceforth bear MacIntire’s name. The board also named MacIntire — who died on March 14 — Shoreham’s “citizen of the year” in recognition of the many civic and philanthropic efforts he pursued on behalf of the town.

Shoreham to vote on future of buildings

Posted on June 3, 2010 |
By John Flowers

SHOREHAM — Shoreham voters will soon get a chance to decide whether the town should build new municipal offices or incorporate them into a Newton Academy re-build that would also include a community center.

Plans call for the Shoreham selectboard to prepare a list of three options to address the town’s quest for more municipal office space and to potentially fill the void left by the April 7 burning of historic Newton Academy on School Street.

Those options, according to Shoreham selectboard Chairman Paul Saenger, will include:

SHOREHAM — A group of Shoreham residents is hoping to plant the seeds for a new building that would rise from the ashes of the former Newton Academy site off School Street.

Newton Academy, which had been the state’s oldest standing secondary school building, burned on April 7 after being struck by lightning. A citizens’ group had been raising funds to restore the 1810 academy building for use as a community center and to potentially host Shoreham’s municipal offices.

SHOREHAM — Shoreham residents continue to mourn the passing of one of their community’s most dedicated volunteers, Wilson MacIntire, whose many good works included establishment of municipal tennis courts and the ongoing renovation of Newton Academy.

“It is a big loss for the town of Shoreham,” said Deb Kelly, who with MacIntire spearheaded construction of the two outdoor tennis courts installed behind Shoreham Elementary School in 2007.

MacIntire, 75, died at his home on Main Street on March 14.
