River Watch group has some concerns with local waters

MIDDLEBURY — At its volunteer training session in March, Addison County River Watch Collaborative had a standing-room-only crowd of eager water samplers, and, since then, one morning per month those volunteers from many Addison County communities have been venturing out to collect bottles of water from area streams. This year the river monitoring collaborative established several new sampling sites on the upper Middlebury River in Ripton, and also is still monitoring five other rivers in the county, an ongoing effort designed to tease out trends in water quality.

Author Rick Bass schools writers in environmental activism

RIPTON — Acclaimed writer and activist Rick Bass sparked a lively discussion about activism, the environment, and the justice system when he gave a lecture titled “The Joy of Being Arrested” at Middlebury College’s Bread Loaf campus this past Thursday morning.

Bass told the story of being arrested when he zip-tied himself to the gates of the White House to protest the Keystone XL pipeline the day after President Obama’s State of the Union address in February 2013.

Ripton man arrested on burglary charge

'Penguins' take a winter plunge to aid Ripton school

RIPTON — Twenty-one North Branch School students, two teachers, and one NBS alum plunged into a Ripton Pond in the first annual North Branch School Penguin Plunge on Saturday, Jan. 25.

As part of their winter ecology studies, students researched water temperatures of local ponds and learned about hypothermia and the body’s reaction to extreme temperatures. Students have been studying how animals survive the winter so the plunge provided a vivid learning experience.

Superintendent Burrows continues tour of seven ACSU towns

Police look for missing Ripton man

RIPTON — Vermont State Police are asking for help from the public in finding a Ripton man who is missing.

Police on Monday received a report that James Daignault, 54, was missing.

Daignault was seen on Saturday, Nov. 23, at approximately 10 a.m. when he was leaving his residence in Ripton en route to a food shelf in Burlington. He never returned.

Ripton Ridge Run draws 235 participants

RIPTON — Two hundred thirty-five runners and walkers experienced gorgeous weather at the 2013 Ripton Ridge Run, Sunday, Oct. 13. The record numbers showing up at this 26th annual event enjoyed sunny skies and warm temperatures, a wonderful race, an excellent lunch and a festive atmosphere. Fifty-five people participated in the 10K run, 140 in the 5K run and 40 in the 5K fun walk. They ranged in age from 3-year-old Kaiya Maclay to 82-year-old Don Lacharite.

Ripton Elementary students check out Middlebury College

RIPTON — The students and staff of Ripton Elementary School — including 44 students in grades pre-K through sixth — on Monday, Sept. 30, took a field trip to Middlebury College.

The day started on the athletic fields, where the Ripton students got to play with men and women from the lacrosse teams, softball team and women’s ice hockey team. Students learned to handle sticks, catch, throw, run and dodge in four different stations around the facilities.

'Green Fire,' an inspiring film, teaches modern conservation

RIPTON — Friends of the Ripton Community Church will host a screening of the Emmy Award winning film “Green Fire: Aldo Leopold and a Land Ethic for Our Time” on Sunday, Sept. 1, at 7 p.m. at the church on Route 125 in Ripton.

The first full-length, high-definition documentary film ever made about legendary conservationist Aldo Leopold, “Green Fire” explores Leopold’s life in the early part of the 20th century and the many ways his land ethic idea continues to be applied all over the world today.
