If you missed the “Senior Lifestyles” special section a few weeks ago, this is an introduction to the End of Life Care Partnership that has been operating here in Addison County for eight years. Our mission is “to create a framework for our organizations to collaborate on our common goal of providing education about dying, death and options for care.”

On the last Monday of each month we will bring topics to light in order to inspire and inform our friends and neighbors about dying and death.

Letters to the Editor: Formal shooting range offers solution

Posted on July 27, 2017 |
By Chris Pike

I am a gun owner and I target shoot. I live next to an informal shooting range in the National Forest in Ripton. In good weather shooters are there daily, anywhere from 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Groups and clubs have 4- to 5-hour meets — all calibers, fully automatics and explosive targets. One individual comes up at least once a year with a 50-caliber tripod mounted machine gun.

Dr. Fred. Kniffin: Put health and well-being ahead of politics

Posted on July 27, 2017 |
By Fred Kniffin

This week’s Community Forum is by Dr. Fred Kniffin, president of the UVM Health Network’s Porter Medical Center

If you have been following the news about health care reform coming out of Washington, you may be both confused and concerned. The issue is complex. Emotions run high and there is a good deal of fatigue around the national debate, because it is an enormously important economic and human issue that touches each of our lives and it has become highly politicized and partisan.

George Jaeger: American alone?

Posted on July 27, 2017 |
By George Jaeger

This week’s writer is George Jaeger, a retired Senior Foreign Service officer and former Diplomat-in-Residence at Middlebury College.  He and his wife Pat live in New Haven.

In six short months President Donald Trump has upended the world order. His erratic behavior and “America First” policies have cost us much of the world’s confidence and reversed over 70 years of long-term American foreign policy, in which we had successfully linked our interests with those of others.

Eric L. Davis: Economy doesn't match expectations

Posted on July 27, 2017 |
By Eric L. Davis

On Friday, the Commerce Department’s Bureau of Economic Analysis will release its initial estimate of U.S. economic growth in the second quarter of 2017. The consensus among economists is that the April-to-June growth number will come in at somewhere between 2.4 and 2.6 percent. While this would represent a substantial improvement from the 1.4 percent growth in the first three months of the year, it is well below the 3 percent-plus target for GDP growth that is part of the Trump Administration’s economic forecasts.

I attended the ACTR temporary Hub (bus stop) relocation meeting a few weeks back. At this meeting an issue that has concerned me for several years was mentioned. On numerous occasions I have been present when another vehicle has gone the wrong way through Court Square onto North Pleasant Street.

Letters to the Editor: All should speak out, act against unjust deportations

Posted on July 27, 2017 |
By Tom Baskett and Jean Rosenberg

The Society of Friends (Quakers) has a 350-year history of speaking truth to power when they feel that the rights of individuals or groups are being threatened.  The recent escalation in deportation threats to our friends and neighbors in the farming community is extremely disturbing. The truth about these activities is that they do not make us safer — they divert taxpayer funds from more beneficial uses, they disrupt families, communities, and businesses and they violate the inherent rights of all people to be respected members of the human community.

Ways of Seeing, Johanna Nichols: At 200, Thoreau still speaks to us

Posted on July 27, 2017 |
By Johanna Nichols

Happy 200th anniversary of your birth Henry David Thoreau (July 12, 1817). I am sure you would have something to say about being remembered so many years later for the writer you dreamed to be in your lifetime. Before “Walden” was published, you spoke at the Concord Lyceum, in your Massachusetts hometown, about the interrelationship of God, man and nature. You ended your oration with these eight words “In wildness is the preservation of the world.” Little did you know how long that gift would keep on giving.
