Ways of Seeing: A line in time

Posted on October 17, 2016 |
By Teena Hayden

Our trip through life is marked by milestones: births, graduations, marriages and deaths…. But deaths seem to color the world with deeper and more lasting tones. It’s as if grief draws a line that slices our lives into “before” and “after” in the space of a single breath. A line of symmetry, where the loved ones left living find themselves in the same environment, with the same job and friends, even shopping in the same grocery store as they did “before,” yet nothing is the same.

Opinion: Former Transportation official touts Minter's Irene efforts

Posted on October 17, 2016 |
By Brian Searles

This week’s writer is Brian Searles, who served as transportation secretary in two different administrations and retired from the position in 2014.

I recently read a press release from the Vermont Republican Party that attempts to cast a shadow over the role gubernatorial candidate Sue Minter played in the response to Tropical Storm Irene. The release titled, “Vermont Media Begins to Lift The Curtain on Minter’s Irene Claims,” includes quotes from a party official and from an editorial that ran in the Caledonian Record newspaper.

Opinion: Some lawmakers avoid firearms, carbon tax issues

Posted on October 17, 2016 |
By Ivan St. George

I recently contacted all Addison 3 (Vergennes area) House candidates as well as Addison County Senatorial candidates to ask them whether or not they would support the proposed carbon tax, which would add 88¢ to every gallon of gasoline, $1.02 to heating oil, etc. I also asked for their positions regarding expanded background checks for gun purchases, a policy which has also received considerable attention for several years, and especially recently as the gubernatorial candidate of the Democrat party has made it her number one policy priority issue if elected.

Opinion: House Speaker: The Legislature does not deficit spend

Posted on October 17, 2016 |
By Shap Smith

Some on the campaign trail suggest that the Vermont Legislature has engaged in deficit spending over the last 14 years. That is simply not true.

Clippings: Truth about Trump was always obvious

Posted on October 13, 2016 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

One analogy for the Republican Party’s response to the release of Donald Trump’s taped 2005 remarks detailing his intent to commit adultery via crude sexual assault comes from the world of sports — the NFL, to be exact.

Jessie Raymond: Frightening message in a bottle

Posted on October 13, 2016 |
By Jessie Raymond

I learned something about myself last week: Water — or, more specifically, my glass water bottle — means a lot to me. Growing older is just one self-discovery after another, isn’t it?

I wasn’t always a big water drinker. But a decade or two ago, when certain corporations figured out that gullible consumers would pay for free water if it were sold in plastic bottles, I was like, “Hey, I’m a gullible consumer. Here’s my money.” I was hooked.

Opinion: State senate candidate gets high marks for listening

Posted on October 13, 2016 |
By George and Margaret Klohck

Sen. Chris Bray, who has served in both the Vermont House and Senate, is one of the best elected officials we have known. He listens to his constituents with a greater depth of concern and really considers what he is being asked to support, then goes to work to find the best solution. We give him an A+ for being responsive to the concerns of the people of Addison County and Vermont.

Opinion: Charbonneau on right side of many issues

Posted on October 13, 2016 |
By Veronica Ciambra

Please support Jill Charbonneau for representative from Middlebury. She will work on issues that are important to working Vermonters:

•  $15 per hour minimum wage.

•  Universal publicly financed primary care as the first step to single payer.

•  A fairer tax system — currently the top one percent of Vermonters do not pay their fair share of taxes, depriving the state of needed funds. (Vermont ranks only 46th in tax fairness in the nation).

Victor Nuovo on Spinoza: Calvin and Hobbes

Posted on October 13, 2016 |
By Victor Nuovo

The subjects of this essay are not the popular comic strip characters, but the real personages after whom they are named. John Calvin (1509–1564) and Thomas Hobbes (1588–1679) do not convey their wisdom in easy installments and with gentle humor; they are harsh and acerbic and precise; their thought is difficult and systematic. Spinoza read them assiduously, took them seriously, borrowed from them, and creatively reshaped what he borrowed.
