Victor Nuovo: Private property and civil society

Posted on September 7, 2017 |
By Victor Nuovo

Editor’s Note: This is the 23rd essay by Middlebury College Professor Emeritus Victor Nuovo on the origins of western political thought.

By VICTOR NUOVO

Philosopher John Locke believed that the paramount duty of civil government is to safeguard the life, liberty and property of all the people. He believed that a person’s right to these things are rights of nature: they become civil rights whenever a person consents to enter a civil state; there they may be limited, but they are never lost.

Letter to the editor: More nurses needed at Porter Medical Center

Posted on September 1, 2017 |
By Alice Leo

We’re not writing today to talk about the rising salaries of hospital administrators, even though as reported in Vermont Digger, they have increased 12% over the last year.

We’re not writing today to talk about the difficulties many of our patients have in paying for medical care — even though Vermonters voted definitively nearly a decade ago for universal healthcare.

Posted on September 1, 2017 |
By Jessi de Boer

Counseling Service of Addison County and The Addison County Committee on Opiate Addiction have teamed to put together a series of articles for our community this summer. Our hope is that this column offers information, support and hope for addiction recovery, specifically opiate addiction (heroin/painkillers).

This week’s writer is Jessi Farnsworth, who is a licensed alcohol and drug counselor and a licensed clinical mental health counselor, is coordinator of Adult Recovery Services at CSAC.

Jessie Raymond: Dorm drop-off comes full circle

Posted on August 31, 2017 |
By Jessie Raymond

I’ll never forget what I said to my parents in 1986, on the day they dropped me off at college: “Bye!”

To be fair, I was at college — kind of a big deal — and they were just older people who, as far as I could tell, didn’t have much going on in their lives. I’m sure they were envious that I was finally free from our boring little Podunk town, and they were probably devastated that from then on it would be just the two of them.

Gregory Dennis: Trump, climate and summer disaster films

Posted on August 31, 2017 |
By Greg Dennis

It’s still summer, so still a season for disaster films. And we’re in the middle of watching two such spectacles.

Let’s call the first one “Trump: The Sequel.”

The Donald’s presidency holds daily plot twists. But if you’d paid attention to his past career — including bankrupt casinos, Trump “University” and other rip-offs — well, then you had some idea of what was coming.

Letters to the Editor: Time to chip in for Open Door Clinic

Posted on August 31, 2017 |
By Patricia Heather-Lea

I read about the need of the Open Door Clinic in your Aug. 24 edition.

They need to fill a shortfall of $62,000. I believe that there are enough individuals or service minded groups in our communities who can chip in. Some simple math: 620 X 100 = 62,000.

Here is the name and address to which you can send the check: Open Door Clinic, 100 Porter Drive, Middlebury, VT  05753.

Thank you for your generosity.

Patricia Heather-Lea

Letters to the Editor: Co-housing acted unneighborly

Posted on August 31, 2017 |
By Ginny Vautier

I live on Mountain View St., the new driveway to the “Co-Housing Development.” After a year of putting up with huge construction vehicles, mud, dirt, dust, my lawn torn up for new water pipes and sink holes that are still happening near my driveway, I now have an issue with it.

Poem: At the Middlebury Dog Park

Posted on August 31, 2017 |
By Gary Margolis

What joy unleashed, seeing

you here again, late

in the afternoon, after work.

So we can say hello,

front to end. Let out

of our cooped-up houses

and apartments. Owned

and for a moment freed.

To feel like ourselves.

Breeding and not bred.

Writing our names in pee.

Covering each other’s crap

with our own. To say

remember who we are.

Friends-in-the world

Ways of Seeing, Johanna Nichols: Facing fear, anxiety are part of life's journey

Posted on August 31, 2017 |
By Johanna Nichols

I am a person who likes to plan for all contingencies. It supports my illusion that I am in control. My daughters know this about me. They know the anxiety that has been passed down the generations like family china. That’s why they chose for me a gift of a silver necklace with natural stones.

Victor Nuovo: Locke & Hobbes, the origin of civil society

Posted on August 31, 2017 |
By Victor Nuovo

Editor’s note: This is the 22nd essay by Middlebury College Professor Emeritus Victor Nuovo on the origins of western political thought.

How did civil society or the civil state begin? There is general agreement that a civil state is not a product of nature, but something made by human art, the art of politics. This is what Hobbes believed and affirmed in the memorable sentence that begins his great work, Leviathan:
