Lazo joins Greentree Real Estate

MONKTON — Greentree Real Estate of Monkton welcomes Orion Lazo as its newest licensed real estate agent. Lazo joined Greentree at the end of 2015 and has been a licensed Realtor for a year.

Lazo moved to Vermont from Colorado in 2013 and says he fell in love with the natural beauty and tightknit community of the Green Mountain State. He holds a B.S. in psychology from University of Vermont. He taught adaptive skiing at Vail from 2007 until 2013.

Vermont Gas proceeds with final hearings for Phase I pipeline

MONKTON — Three landowners now stand between Vermont Gas Systems and the 164 property easements it needs to proceed with Phase I of the Addison County pipeline project — if, that is, the Public Service Board decides in Vermont Gas’s favor when it issues a decision in its reexamination of the project’s 2013 Certificate of Public Good.

Monkton students donate over 1,300 food items

MONKTON — The fifth- and sixth-grade Student Council at Monkton Central School announces the results of their very successful Holiday Food Drive. The school community collected 1,318 non-perishable food items in just six school days.

Tari Shattuck grant helps kids remain calm and focused

MONKTON — The Tari Shattuck Education Foundation has provided a generous grant to support students’ social-emotional learning at Monkton Central School. With their funding, Monkton Central School was able to purchase Hoberman spheres or “breathing balls” for every classroom, related arts room, and other rooms throughout the school, for the purpose of encouraging students to use “belly breathing” as a way to calm their bodies and refocus their attention.

Monkton man wins Silver Feather for wildlife work

MONKTON/MIDDLEBURY — The Otter Creek Audubon Society (OCAS) Board of Directors has awarded Chris Slesar of Monkton the organization’s 2015 Silver Feather award.

At its annual dinner last month, the OCAS bestowed the award on Slesar “in honor of notable devotion, dedication and untiring effort on behalf of the preservation and appreciation of the birds, other wildlife, and natural communities of Addison County,” according to the OCAS.

Boy Scouts still have trees, wreaths

MONKTON — If you still need to get a Christmas tree or want to get a nice wreath for the holidays, Monkton Boy Scout Troop 525 will be selling trees and wreaths at the Monkton Friends Methodist Church each weekend before Christmas. The Scouts will be at the church on Saturdays from 9 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. and on Sundays from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Prices of the trees, coming from Craftsbury, are $35 each.

Injured Monkton man rises to the challenge, regains independence

MONKTON — Chris Grant pretty much had life by the tail.

He had his health, a home, a job and a Harley.

Then June 27, 2009, came along and changed his life forever.

Grant, then 36, was taking his motorcycle for a quick burn along Walker Mountain Road in Clarendon. He was a mile-and-a-half from his home when he rolled into a curve and saw an oncoming pickup truck that was veering across the centerline of the road.

Boy Scout helps erect welcome signs

MONKTON — A recent Saturday saw Monkton Ridge (and Monkton Boro) get a series of new welcome signs erected by Will Aldridge of Monkton Scout Troop 525 and his crew. The signs sport the Monkton flag and “Welcome to Monkton Ridge, Please Drive Safely.” Corresponding signs are also on the approaches to the Boro. This project was undertaken as an Eagle Scout service project and is the highest achievement award that a Scout can attain.

Vermont Gas pipeline nears easement goal

MONKTON — Vermont Gas officials on Thursday said the company has reached land easement agreements with 160 of the 164 affected property owners along the Addison Natural Gas Project corridor, and noted that eminent domain proceedings are still pending against the four landowners who have declined to sign deals.

“We are really close to having agreements with everyone,” Vermont Gas CEO Don Rendall said during a phone interview. “We’re still talking to most of the remaining four.”
