New plan pitched for attracting businesses: Middlebury group offers growth ideas

MIDDLEBURY — A task force charged with re-booting Middlebury’s economic development strategy is proposing, among other things, that the town create a new revolving loan fund to support business start-ups, and use some of its surplus local option tax revenue to improve town infrastructure to help attract entrepreneurs.

Middlebury studies Tax Increment Financing option: Revenues could fund parking garage

MIDDLEBURY — Now that the state of Vermont has authorized the creation of six new Tax Increment Financing (TIF) districts, Middlebury officials are intently studying the program as a possible vehicle for funding a new parking garage in the downtown area.

Middlebury Police Log: Middlebury police investigate man wrapped in a tarp on TAM trail

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police investigated a July 15 report of a body wrapped in a tarp on a portion of the Trail Around Middlebury off Route 7 South.

Officers responding to the scene found a live, drunken man sleeping in the tarp.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

•  Helped Vermont State Police find two runaway juveniles in the John Graham Court area on July 10.

•  Were informed of the theft of a Nexus electronic tablet from a Main Street church on July 10.

Middlebury short of owner approvals for tax district

Local animated film earns international acclaim; vote for it in online contest

MIDDLEBURY — “The Collinwood Fire,” the latest animated film by Middlebury’s Daniel Houghton, begins with a filmmaker and a journalist racing toward a column of smoke rising above a small town.

When the duo arrive at the scene, they record what they see on film and paper: children fleeing their elementary school as it is devoured by flames, forced to run past the corpses of their classmates and jump off a fire escape that does not reach the ground.

Program marks 30 years of summer fun for kids

VERGENNES — This year marks important milestones in the full-day summer camps of the Mary Johnson Children’s Center. The program has operated for 30 years in Middlebury, 25 years in Bristol, and 15 in Vergennes.

Maybe 30 years ago, kids weren’t wiring bananas into piano keyboards or making solar robots, as they’ll do this summer? But then as now, the pioneering program provides an important resource for local families.

Blue Spruce fire tied to electrical mishap

MIDDLEBURY — The July 12 fire that destroyed the Blue Spruce Motel on Route 7 South was likely the result of an electrical mishap, according to Middlebury fire Chief Dave Shaw.

Investigators have ruled out arson, Shaw added.

Authorities have not pinpointed any specific appliance or wire within the motel building that might have triggered the fire, but they have identified the general location where the blaze began.

“It looks like it started in the center of the structure, above the office,” Shaw said.

Expert to illustrate history of jewelry in New England

The talk is free and open to the public at the Residence on Lodge Road in Middlebury.

Part of Middlebury Main Street closing for bridge work this Friday

MIDDLEBURY  — On Friday, July 21, Main Street in downtown Middlebury will be closed between Seymour Street and Merchants Row due to temporary bridge construction, transportation officials announce.

The road will be closed for about two weeks to enable the Vermont Agency of Transportation to build a temporary bridge over the railroad to ensure the safety of travelers until a permanent bridge is built in 2018 through 2020.

VTrans has established a project website, vtrans.vermont.gov/projects/middlebury, to provide information about the project.

Middlebury American Legion wins award for charity

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury American Legion Post 27 scooped up some impressive awards at the annual Vermont American Legion convention held June 23 to 25 in Rutland.

Post No. 27 was awarded the Americanism Award based on membership, the Ray Greenwood Children & Youth Award, the Meritorious Service Award for Extreme Support of Children & Youth Programs, and the Edward Giles Americanism Trophy for the post with the outstanding Americanism Program.
