Neat Repeats awards $27,679 in grants

College hires new finance chief

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College last week announced the appointment of David J. Provost as the institution’s new executive vice president for finance and administration, starting Jan. 23, 2017. Provost comes to Middlebury from Champlain College in Burlington, where he spent 12 years overseeing a variety of core functions, including finance, advancement, campus planning, facilities, human resources, and information technology.

Labor historian to talk about grassroots struggle against poverty

MIDDLEBURY — Labor historian Annelise Orleck will recount the struggle for welfare rights by Las Vegas women in the 1970s in a talk at Ilsley Public Library in Middlebury on Wednesday, Jan. 4, at 7 p.m. Her talk, “What if Poor Women Ran the World?” is part of the Vermont Humanities Council’s First Wednesdays lecture series and is free and open to the public.

Orleck will tell the story of nine African American union maids in Las Vegas who challenged welfare cuts and built a long-lasting, vibrant anti-poverty program run by poor mothers.

IPJ Real Estate celebrates new location

MIDDLEBURY — IPJ Real Estate recently moved to a new location on Middlebury’s Main Street.

Now located at 34 Main St., the new office is situated a few doors down from the company’s previous space. The new office provides work space for each of the agency’s four active Realtors, the licensed agent assistant, the office manager, as well as private meeting space. IPJ’s business has grown by 20 percent in the last couple of years and they had simply outgrown the other space.

Middlebury man loses life in fire

MIDDLEBURY — State and local investigators on Thursday morning were still combing through the charred remains of a home at 7 Murdock Court, Middlebury, in search of the cause of a blaze that took the life of 95-year-old Robert Kellogg.

The retired teacher and counselor who had lived in Middlebury for nearly three decades was remembered as an active member of the community who, in the words of one former neighbor, “lived an ordinary life in what seemed to me to be an extraordinary way.”

Artists' miniature Christmas trees to be raffled at Sheldon Museum

MIDDLEBURY — Twelve colorful, decorative miniature  Christmas Trees are on display at the Henry Sheldon Museum in Middlebury, each decorated by accomplished local Addison County artists. The trees will be on display through Dec. 20, when they will be raffled off to support the education and exhibit programs of the museum.

Middlebury College achieves carbon neutrality

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College has won an important battle in what Resident Scholar Bill McKibben recently asserted must become an all-out war on climate change.

Late last week the college announced it had reached carbon neutrality, meaning it has brought its net carbon footprint to zero.

“I am thrilled to announce this significant moment in Middlebury’s history of environmental leadership,” said President Laurie Patton, in the announcement.

Loan could create a beverage hub in Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury town officials on Tuesday agreed to float kombucha brewer Aqua ViTea a $125,000 loan to upgrade its Pond Lane headquarters with new equipment.

The hope is that the company could someday share the equipment with other small beverage companies seeking to get their start in the beverage industry, and in the process build the town’s reputation as a beverage hub.
