Field Days to honor its former president with new Foster welcome center

NEW HAVEN — Addison County Fair and Field Days will honor and remember the president of its board of directors who was killed in a farm accident last fall by building a new welcome center on the New Haven fairgrounds that James H. Foster Jr. had imagined.

“This was Jim’s vision,” said Benj Deppman, vice president of the Field Days board of directors.

The board had long been working on creating a new ticket booth to replace the crammed and aging booths that have been used for years.

Drum for fun at a spiritual gathering in Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — This Sunday, May 13, at 1 p.m., drummer Matt Meyer will conduct a workshop in Middlebury at Champlain Valley Unitarian-Universalist Society (CVUUS) on “Drumming and Spirituality.”

The workshop is a chance for people of all skill levels to participate in hands-on rhythm-making. It will tour instruments from around the world and experience the connection of community music-making through different activities, stories, games and discussions, as well as look at how rhythm and music intersect.

Lara Mones, who brings extensive arts administration experience to Scrag Mountain Music, said she was honored to work alongside founders and artistic directors Mary Bonhag and Evan Premo and the board to continue to grow the organization

Middlebury Police Log: Police looking into sex crime allegations

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police launched investigations into two alleged sex crimes reported in the community last week.

On May 1, Vermont Adult Protective Services and Middlebury police began looking into a potential sexual assault following an initial interview of an alleged victim at Porter Medical Center.

Then, on May 3, police were tipped off about a “possible child sexual abuse” case involving a local family.

SUV crashes into two Middlebury police cruisers, two injured

MIDDLEBURY — Two people ended up in the hospital Monday night after a car driven on Case Street by an East Middlebury man crashed into two Middlebury police cruisers that were responding to a call on Mead Lane.

Officer Kevin Emilio and Patrick Chaffee, 40, of East Middlebury were taken to Porter Hospital; neither suffered life-threatening injuries. The third driver involved in the crash, Officer Connor Sousa, was unhurt.

Ban the bag? Duo seeks end to plastic bags in Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — If they were balled up to the size of tennis balls, the disposable plastic shopping bags used in Middlebury every year would fill up more than three tractor-trailers — maybe even as many as six.

Few of those bags stayed balled up, however, and most of them find their way to landfills.

Middlebury resident Amy McAninch and Middlebury College sophomore Amelia Miller have proposed a solution to this excess waste: a townwide ban on single-use, carry-out plastic bags.

New Porter ExpressCare clinic a big success in its first year

MIDDLEBURY — Porter Medical Center’s ExpressCare clinic, which will soon mark its first anniversary, has wildly exceeded its boosters’ expectations and may soon increase its operating hours in order to meet growing demand for the service.

“It’s received enormous support from our community,” Porter President Dr. Fred Kniffin said of ExpressCare, which treats folks with non-life threatening injuries or illnesses who might otherwise seek out more costly and acute Emergency Department care.

Middlebury Antique Center and Ben Franklin to close soon

MIDDLEBURY — The sun will set on two longtime Middlebury businesses this summer: The Ben Franklin Store at 63 Main St. and the Middlebury Antique Center at 3255 Route 7 South.

Owners of both stores have been trying to sell their respective properties for more than a year. And in both cases, the owners are making clear their closing plans to customers through colorful signs and related liquidation sales.

Career Center's maker space leaps ahead

MIDDLEBURY — An effort to crowdfund $6,000 to be eligible for a $100,000 grant to create a community-wide “makers space” at the Patricia Hannaford Career Center in Middlebury faces a deadline this Friday, May 11, with the goal in sight.

“We’re well on our way to reaching the $6,000 match,” said career center Superintendent Dana Peterson, though added that with or without the grant, the career center’s maker space is well on its way to becoming a reality.
