Literacy foundation gives away books to combat 'summer slide'

VERGENNES — Dozens of children were grinning ear-to-ear recently as they perused stacks of glistening new books the Children’s Literacy Foundation, or CLiF, was giving away for free in Middlebury, Vergennes and Bristol.

That’s right, free.

As part of CLiF’s commitment to encourage summer reading, on Monday, July 24, the nonprofit held storytelling and book giveaways at community hubs in the county’s three largest population centers.

Middlebury to cast off construction blues with downtown block party

There’s not a whole lot that’s fun about construction, especially when it tears up the heart of downtown Middlebury. Traffic will be detoured around the centre-ville starting today, Thursday, July 27, through Saturday, Aug. 5, which means, less traffic for all of our beloved shops on Main Street and Merchants Row.

Kolts sentenced at emotional hearing

MIDDLEBURY — Rein Kolts, a 70-year-old Orwell resident and former coach and bus driver at Shoreham Elementary School, on Monday was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for repeated nonconsensual sex with a minor.

Kolts was convicted on Jan. 20 for the assaults on a girl who was 11 to 13 years old when the crimes were committed. The victim, a New Hampshire resident and Kolts’ niece, told police the offences occurred more than five times at Kolts’ Orwell home and once in Chester.

Middlebury adopts new business growth plan

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard on Tuesday endorsed a new economic development policy for the town that, among other things, calls for creating a new economic development committee and establishing a revolving loan fund to help local businesses.

Police officers lauded for quick response

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury residents Jeff and Erika Garner had an hour to fritter away last Tuesday, July 18, so they thought they’d relax with a glass of beer at the Drop-in Brewery on Route 7 South and watch the world go by.

Tragically, it proved far from a relaxing visit.

The husband and wife had barely placed their glasses onto the brewery’s picnic table when they were pressed into action to help a man experiencing a massive heart attack on the property.

Schueneman to lead local church

MIDDLEBURY — The United Methodist Church in Middlebury has welcomed the Rev. Dr. Mary Kay Schueneman to ministry in the congregation. Schueneman will be the Minister of Congregational Care and the Coordinating Pastor. She will also continue her ministry at the 1st Congregational Church of Cornwall as its settled pastor.

Schueneman came to Vermont in 2008 after living in several other states. She came here as visiting assistant professor of religion at Middlebury College, a position she held until 2014.

Middlebury Police Log: Police attend to domestic incidents, woman injured by her car

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police responded to a Colonial Drive home on July 17 on a report of a woman injured by her own vehicle. Police said the woman had been experiencing mechanical problems with her car but was able to bring it to a stop at the crest of her driveway.

As she was trying to diagnose the problem near the rear of the vehicle, the car began to roll backward and knocked her to the ground before it stopped at an embankment alongside the driveway, police said.

Porter nurses in talks for a new contract: Hospital budget calls for seven new RNs

MIDDLEBURY — Porter Medical Center nurses and management are trying to hammer out a new contract that could soon affect a larger staff.

As reported in the Addison Independent on July 20, the proposed fiscal year 2018 PMC budget calls for adding seven new registered nurse positions to the current staff of 145. Porter officials believe a bolstered nursing staff would help the organization shave around $2.5 million in what it is currently spending for more costly travellers.

Boats, B&W photos and beautiful Vt. landscapes: Museum exhibits all link to Middlebury College grads

MIDDLEBURY — What do a boat, “LIFE” magazine, and the landscapes of Vermont have in common? They’re all part of a trio of summer exhibitions on display at the Middlebury College Museum of Art until Aug. 13.

In what Museum Director Richard Saunders described as “total serendipity,” all three exhibitions are also tied to alumni of the college.
