Dear Homeward Bound: How do I know when my old pet is suffering?

Dear Homeward Bound,

I don’t know if you can answer this but I am wondering when you know when the time has come to say good-bye to a pet. Our family dog, Linus, is 14 and he’s on a lot of medicine to treat different health issues he has. He seems happy but I’m worried that he’s hiding how he feels. I don’t want him to suffer.

Those who regularly travel through downtown Middlebury in 2018 saw construction crews drill away on a new drainage system and extend a temporary access road from Water Street to the Battell Block — another warm-up act to the main event that will begin its three-year run beginning this spring: A $72 million plan to replace the Main Street and Merchants Row rail bridges with a 360-foot-long concrete tunnel.

Tiger gymnasts notch first win

Tiger boys' hockey falls to Green Knights, rebounds against Raiders

SOUTH BURLINGTON — The Middlebury Union High School boys’ hockey team last week split a pair of Division I road games. The Tigers are 6-2 heading into two 7 p.m. home games this week, vs. South Burlington on Wednesday and St. Albans on Saturday.

On Wednesday host Rice improved to 4-1-1 by hanging on for a 3-2 victory over the Tigers. The Green Knights scored three times in the first 3:00 of the second period to take the lead, with two of the goals scored by Kieran Connolly.

Plastic bag ban is gaining steam in Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — A proposed ordinance banning single-use plastic bags in Middlebury may soon go before the town’s voters. But first it has to go through the selectboard.

Because of environmental concerns around flimsy plastic bags used mostly in shopping, efforts to ban them have grown in recent years, with residents in two Vermont towns already outlawing them.

HOPE ready for building renovations

MIDDLEBURY — People who work at and receive services through the Helping Overcome Poverty’s Effects (HOPE) Community Services Building at 282 Boardman St. face around three months of construction upheaval. But officials of the social services nonprofit believe the payoff will make the temporary inconveniences worthwhile.

Workers on Jan. 10 are scheduled to begin more than $700,000 in renovations to the 20-year-old structure, all aimed at making the building more comfortable and client-friendly.

Big upgrades loom for Middlebury sewer plant

MIDDLEBURY — New York Times columnist Frank Bruni will share his insights on issues affecting colleges and communities in a talk at Middlebury College’s Wilson Hall on Wednesday, Jan. 9, at 7 p.m. The event, “Conversations with Frank Bruni,” is part of the Vermont Humanities Council’s First Wednesdays lecture series and is free and open to the public.

Bruni will lead a wide-ranging conversation on topics including identity politics and its effect on campuses and communities, and the importance of free speech.
