Top 10, No. 7: Rail bridge replacement tears up downtown Middlebury

A $52 million effort to replace Middlebury’s two downtown rail bridges isn’t due to begin in earnest until early next spring, but area merchants and residents in June got a sneak peek of the major work to come when the Vermont Agency of Transportation demolished the deteriorating Merchants Row and Main Street spans above the railroad and replaced them with two temporary bridges.

Top 10, No. 8: College protesters shout down speaker

There were many protests in Addison County in 2017 (see No. 2 in our Top 10), but one that struck a particularly grating chord that echoed around the nation was the demonstration over speaker Charles Murray’s appearance at Middlebury College this past March 2. The local college, like institutions of higher learning around the country, continues to wrestle with free speech issues as we head into the new year.

Middlebury food co-op unveils expanded store

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury Natural Foods Co-op (MNFC) sells hundreds of wholesome, organic products.

But its customers are positively thrilled with the store’s latest offering, which can’t even be consumed.

It’s more space.

Middlebury to prepare plan for its public forests

Area police officers grow beards to give kids respite from cancer

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Police Department’s second annual “Deer Camp Beard’s for Kids with Cancer” campaign has raised more than $2,200 for programming at Camp Ta-Kum-Ta.

Middlebury police Officer Darrin Hinterneder once again coordinated the effort, which included participation from other Addison County law enforcement agencies, including the Addison County Sheriff’s Department.

Middlebury patrolman builds a 'Sweet' career

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury Police Officer Donnie Sweet’s beard is still fairly brown. And while his bullet-proof vest provides some padding, it doesn’t add quite enough girth for him to be mistaken for Santa Claus.

Still, the loquacious lawman epitomized the true spirit of giving among the younger officers on Christmas Day when he worked a double shift. Sweet’s kids are all grown, so the 31-year veteran of the department decided to help cover that coveted day on the calendar so greener folks on the force could share the holiday with their kids.

Middlebury Fire Department honors those who serve

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Fire Department and Battell Hose Company held their joint annual awards dinner on Saturday, Dec. 2, at the American Legion Post 27 in Middlebury. The dinner was attended by current, former, and life members of the Middlebury Fire Department, as well as by the members of the board of directors of the Battell Hose Company, and guests.

Chief Shaw presided over the annual presentation of awards recognizing the contributions and efforts of the members of the Middlebury Fire Department.

Middlebury Police Log: Man, dog struck by car in crosswalk

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police responded to a car-pedestrian accident in Court Square on Dec. 18.

As previously reported in the Addison Independent, Town Hall Theater Executive Director Doug Anderson had been walking his dog, Willie, when Anderson was struck by a car.
