Memorial Sports Center sets benefit tournament

MIDDLEBURY — Memorial Sports Center backers are looking for hockey teams to play in the rink’s second annual “Heat It Up Tournament.” That Oct. 7 benefit event that will help fund the final phase of the Middlebury facility’s expansion project, started in 2007.

Panther men's soccer fall on late strike, 1-0

NEW LONDON, Conn. — Host Connecticut College on Saturday connected on a free kick in the final minute of regulation to edge the Middlebury College men’s soccer team, 1-0, in a rain-soaked NESCAC contest.

The free kick came from about 24 yards out from the left post and curled a shot just over the defensive wall toward the near side. The ball skipped off the wet turf, and when Panther goalie Matthew Hyer (nine saves) couldn’t handle it cleanly Matt Butera tapped the rebound into the net.

Ralph Myhre hosts college tourney

MIDDLEBURY — The Ralph Myhre Golf Course hosted the Middlebury College Fall Employee Scramble this past weekend.

The first-place team on the Front Nine was Phil Cyr, Rick James, Dan Stearns and Ashley Salerno. Prevailing on the Back nine were Jim Hadeka, Don Dayton, Bernie Andrews and Steve Huestis.

Winning closest-to-the-pin competitions were Bob Preseau, Val Costello, Katie Ritter and Bernie Andrews.

In the Sept. 7 Wednesday Evening Men’s Scramble the foursome of Josh Newton, Bert Phinney, Ric Wheeler and Dale White prevailed.

Panther women's soccer opens with trio of wins

NEW LONDON, Conn. — The Middlebury College women’s soccer team on Saturday scored twice in the final 13 minutes to win the Panthers’ NESCAC opener, 2-0, at Connecticut College.

The Panthers, ranked No. 18 in the NCAA Division III preseason poll, also won two recent non-league games to open 3-0. They were set to host Plattsburgh on Wednesday. Amherst will visit the Panthers on Saturday at noon.

Middlebury Police Log for Sept. 13

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police cited Todd Brigham, 27, of Whiting and Devin Lowell, 26, of Orwell for theft of services, following an incident at Two Brothers Tavern on Main Street on Sept. 5.

Police allege the pair left the tavern without paying their bill.

Law enforcement authorities said they also cited Brigham for driving under the influence of alcohol. Police said Brigham declined to submit to a breath test to establish blood-alcohol content.

Rough Cut ditches bull; Marquis Theater gets a scrubbing

MIDDLEBURY — Owners of The Rough Cut restaurant and the Marquis Theater are making changes this month they hope will enhance the dining and entertainment experiences for customers at those two downtown Middlebury businesses.

Former resident pens biography on historic figure

MIDDLEBURY — Soledad Fox Maura has fond memories of her formative years in Middlebury during the late 1960s and early 1970s. She attended Mary Hogan Elementary School through third grade. She got to meet many interesting students and academicians through her mom, Prof. Marisol Maura, who taught Spanish language, literature and history courses at Middlebury College. Her mom would occasionally have students over to the house for wine, cheese and animated discussions on topics ranging from the Spanish Civil War to the simmering civil unrest of the ’60s.

Want to join a Disaster Animal Response Team?

MIDDLEBURY — Anyone interested in joining an Addison County Disaster Animal Response Team (DART) is invited to take part in an organizational meeting later this month. The meeting will be held at Homeward Bound, 236 Boardman St., Middlebury on Wednesday, Sept. 26, from 6-7:30 p.m.

Come learn how you can become involved with the development of an Affiliated Regional DART for Addison County. Meeting participants will discuss leadership for the group, as well as future plans to officially charter with the statewide Vermont Disaster Animal Response Team (VDART).

Railway deal helps to solidify Middlebury's big dig

MIDDLEBURY — Two competing railroads have signed an agreement clearing the way for a freight train detour around downtown Middlebury during the summer of 2020, when a concrete tunnel will be installed in place of the Main Street and Merchants Row overpasses.

The agreement is between Vermont Rail and its competitor, the Genesee & Wyoming — which owns New England Central Railroad. It allows Vermont Rail to detour its trains around Middlebury using New England Central tracks.
