Post-Irene dredging mistakes in Middlebury River are corrected

MIDDLEBURY — Workers in one day completed major restoration work on an 1,800-foot stretch of the Middlebury River that had been ravaged by Tropical Storm Irene in late August of 2011 and then subsequently dredged of debris by the town of Middlebury.

Classic Chevelle draws a lot of attention

MIDDLEBURY — It’s sitting there just a few paces off Quarry Road in front of a small barn, so coy and so alluring.

Its finely sculpted body has beckoned many a lover of the finer things in life to stop and gawk and even make advances.

“Everybody and their brother dropped in,” said Jamie Simpson. “I had seven to 10 people per day asking if I’d sell it.”

The object of all this solicitous attention is a 1969 Chevrolet Chevelle SS.

Once destroyed, a public art installation is resurrected on college campus

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College Museum of Art last week inaugurated its newest addition to the campus’s distinguished collection of public art — a reinstallation of Vito Acconci’s provocative and seminal sculpture Way Station I (Study Chamber). The sculpture is located adjacent to the pond at the Mahaney Center for the Arts on Porter Field Road.

In conjunction with the exhibition, Acconci will give an illustrated talk, free and open to the public, in Dana Auditorium on Thursday, Nov. 7, at 7 p.m.

Team Middlebury takes 8th place in Solar Decathlon

MIDDLEBURY — The team of around 100 Middlebury College students who toiled for two years to conceive and construct a super-efficient, solar-powered home recently wrapped up an international design competition by earning a prominent finish vs. 20 teams — most from schools that are bigger and with more engineering-focused curricula.

Team Middlebury finished eighth at the U.S. Department of Energy’s sixth biennial Solar Decathlon; winners were announced Oct. 11 at a ceremony in Irvine, Calif.

Change in ACSU policy to affect taxes in 7 towns

MIDDLEBURY — A majority of the Addison Central Supervisory Union board on Wednesday endorsed a new assessment structure for central office expenses that is expected to slightly increase education property taxes for Middlebury residents while slightly decreasing them for the other six communities in the district.

Stanger picked to serve Middlebury on UD-3 school board

MIDDLEBURY — Allison Stanger, a professor of international politics and economics at Middlebury College, will serve as Middlebury’s newest representative on the UD-3 school board.

Stanger takes a spot on the board most recently held by Quinn Mecham, who stepped down this past summer when he relocated with his family to Utah. It’s the role of the ID-4 board — which governs Mary Hogan Elementary School — to appoint replacements for any Middlebury vacancies on the UD-3 board, which represents Middlebury Union middle and high schools.

Annual Empty Bowl dinner set for Nov. 9 in Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — The 22nd annual Empty Bowl Dinner fundraiser will take place Saturday, Nov. 9, at the United Methodist Church in Middlebury. Doors open at 6 p.m. and dinner is served at 6:15.

The Empty Bowl Dinner benefits both HOPE and CVOEO, the two local food shelves that work hard to alleviate the problem of local hunger. With ever-increasing cuts to state and federal funds available to these important organizations, fundraising at the community level becomes more and more important.

MIDDLEBURY — Eighth-grader Jared Bushey’s ram, Moon, recently visited Middlebury Union Middle School to take part in a geometry lesson. Bushey demonstrated his understanding of geometry concepts using shearing tools and strategies for shearing and showing his ram.
