New business fills a niche in Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — When Pierre Vachon set out to get a pair of tragedy/comedy masks tattooed on his upper arm last year, he had no idea that the venture would lead him to become a business proprietor in downtown Middlebury.

During the long hours in the tattoo chair, he got to know tattoo artist Christin Eaton, who was operating a fully licensed business out of her home.

“As she was tattooing me we were talking, and it just kind of fit,” he said. “We thought, ‘Why don’t we open up a shop together?’”

Hiroshima survivor shares story

MIDDLEBURY — On the morning of Aug. 6, 1945, 13-year-old Shigeko Sasamori was within two miles of the epicenter of the atomic bomb’s blast in Hiroshima. She, along with her schoolmates and many other schoolchildren in the Japanese city, was clearing away the rubble of buildings demolished to create escape paths in case of firebombing in the city.

Mayer's book breathes life into Holocaust history

MIDDLEBURY — Irena Sendler has become a national hero in Poland, and deservedly so. During World War II, she risked her life to rescue 2,500 Jewish children from the Warsaw ghetto, often knocking on the doors of Jewish homes and convincing parents to entrust her with their children.

Markowitz vies for frontrunner status

MIDDLEBURY — Deb Markowitz has had some pretty easy sailing in electoral waters since she ran successfully for Vermont Secretary of State back in 1998.

The Montpelier Democrat knows she won’t have it as easy during this election cycle, when she faces four fellow Democrats in an Aug. 24 primary before, she hopes, challenging Republican Lt. Gov. Brian Dubie on Nov. 2.

But Markowitz is certainly not lacking in resources or confidence.

“We need someone who can win, and that’s me,” Markowitz said in an interview with the Independent this week.

'Rosie's Girls' build confidence

MIDDLEBURY — While painting a wooden step stool that she constructed herself at the Rosie’s Girls summer camp this Monday, 13-year-old Amanda Moricette explained why she is attending the three-week camp at the Patricia A. Hannaford Career Center in Middlebury.

“I joined Rosie’s Girls to make new friends and learn how to build stuff,” she said. Her favorite part? Learning how to use the power tools.

Mexican officials visit Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — A Mexican immigrant who wanted to go by the name “J” traveled three hours from the Northeast Kingdom to Middlebury to meet with representatives of the Mexican Consulate in Boston. He was one of at least 100 Mexican workers who met with consulate representatives and received other services at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Middlebury a week ago Saturday.

“J” was in good spirits, joking about the World Cup and enjoying meatballs, which he’d never had before.

Midd. local option taxes flowing

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury officials plan to create a committee to decide what to do with any surplus local option taxes the town collects beyond what is needed to pay off the Cross Street Bridge, but they stressed they will not establish such a panel until the $16 million project is completed.

MIDDLEBURY — This year during the Addison County Transit Resources (ACTR) sponsored program “Way to Go,” National Bank of Middlebury employees planned a road trip from Middlebury through the Smoky Mountains to Nashville, Tennessee, visiting the Grand ole Opry concert, Dollywood, and Elvis Presley’s “Graceland” mansion in Memphis.
