Over 144 homeless in Addison County

Posted on November 4, 2010 |
By Tamara Hilmes

MIDDLEBURY — George is a single, self-employed carpenter. Things usually get a little slower over the winter months, but he cannot find anything this year. He has not paid his rent in three months, and his landlord continues to call and stop by.

This is just one scenario depicting homelessness in Addison County that Ingrid Pixley presented to an audience of around 30 at Middlebury College’s final poverty symposium lecture on Thursday.

Couple found not guilty of disorderly conduct

Posted on November 4, 2010 |
By Andrea Suozzo

MIDDLEBURY — On Sept. 30, Goshen residents David and Erica Sabatini were acquitted of the charges of disorderly conduct leveled against them last April.

The dispute between the Sabatinis and the state was resolved after a trial that lasted most of two days and a number of witnesses.

Attorney Oliver Cleary, who represented the defendants, said that it’s unusual for a disorderly conduct charge to go to court — it is usually settled before a case gets to trial. But, he said, the Sabatinis hoped to prove their innocence rather than settling the case.

Mobile eatery rolls out 'Ver-Mexican' cuisine

Posted on November 4, 2010 |
By Andrea Suozzo

MIDDLEBURY — Kristin and Damian Bittrolf trace their roots back to Ireland, Lithuania and Portugal, and more recently, to Cape Cod and Boston, Mass.

Six days a week, though, the couple dishes up pieces of another culture entirely: They sell burritos from Green-go’s, their food cart in Frog Hollow Alley, just off of Main Street in downtown Middlebury.

The two make no claims to authenticity — but they say that’s not necessarily what their customers are looking for. Damian said they have coined their own term for this hybrid cuisine: “Ver-Mexican.”

ID-4 board eyes $235K budget "Challenge"

Posted on November 1, 2010 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — The Mary Hogan Elementary School board wants the public to weigh in on approximately $235,000 in 2011-2012 budget cuts that would be necessary for the school to comply with the state’s “Challenges for Change” request.

The Vermont Legislature and Education Commissioner Armando Vilaseca have asked the state’s school districts to prepare 2011-2012 budgets that reflect a 2-percent decrease in spending compared to this year. This Challenges for Change directive is designed to save around $23 million in overall education spending next year.

MIDDLEBURY — The message was clear at the Vermont Environmental Consortium’s annual expo at Middlebury College: More green training is necessary for Vermont to have a truly green economy.

“Vermont definitely has the opportunity to keep more jobs and more money in the state,” said Melissa Levy, of St. Albans-based Yellowwood Associates.

MIDDLEBURY — One in 12 households in Vermont could not afford to put food on the table between 2006 and 2008, Joel Berg told a small group of Middlebury College students last Friday.
Berg kicked off Middlebury College’s fall symposium, “American Poverty in Context” at the end of last week in a lunchtime discussion session at the college by addressing an issue that, for Vermonters, hit close to home.

Otter Creek seeks permit for brew pub

Posted on October 28, 2010 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — Otter Creek Brewing is seeking the town of Middlebury’s approval to establish a 90-seat, pub-style restaurant and visitors’ center within its brewery at 85 Exchange St.
Brewery officials stressed the new service will have limited hours, a limited menu and should not eat into — but rather, enhance — the economic fortunes of restaurants and shops in downtown Middlebury.
“We know we are good at making beer; we are not looking to show we are culinary experts,” said Otter Creek Brewery brewmaster Mike Gerhart.

MIDDLEBURY — Last fall, Weybridge Elementary School sixth-graders were able to look at and even touch maps that were drawn more than 500 years ago — something that just less than a decade ago would not have been possible.

Middlebury College’s Special Collections archive, where the students were able to engage with the century-old maps, is only just beginning to see the light of day.
