Student's grant hinges on video

Posted on November 22, 2010 |

MIDDLEBURY — Andrew Freeman willingly posted on Facebook footage of himself tumbling haphazardly over the Otter Creek Falls in downtown Middlebury in a kayak and is encouraging people to watch it and to tell their friends to do the same.

If he gets enough people to watch it — and like it — he’ll will a grant.

Freeman’s video, which he wrote and shot at various locations around Vermont on behalf of the Middlebury College Mountain Club (known also as MMC), was recently chosen as one of four finalists for fabric manufacturer Polartec’s “Made Possible” grant.

MIDDLEBURY — Jutta Miska on Monday recalled setting up a makeshift gathering spot for area teens around 17 years ago in the Middlebury Recreation Department’s old warming hut.

Local teens took to the space, but it was available only for a few years. And thus the seemingly perennial quest for a Middlebury teen center slogged on.

Until now.

Trash district eyes level tipping fee, lower rates

Posted on November 18, 2010 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — The Addison County Solid Waste Management District (ACSWMD) board is considering a 2011 budget of $2,410,761 that reflects a 1.9-percent increase in spending, but would not result in any boost in tipping fees at the district transfer station in Middlebury.
In fact, disposal fees for some recyclables are projected to go down, due to a more lucrative market for such items and because of the provisions of a new electronics waste law that will soon take effect.

Middlebury OKs study of fire station space needs

Posted on November 15, 2010 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard last Tuesday unanimously OK’d a $9,720 contract with Bread Loaf Corp. to help the fire department size up its space needs and determine whether its best option is to plan for on-site expansion or a new headquarters.
The Middlebury Volunteer Fire Department maintains two stations — a primary facility on Seymour Street and a branch station in East Middlebury. The Seymour Street station can barely contain current fire apparatus and will be unable to accommodate the next generation of vehicles.

MIDDLEBURY — For the past three years, author Jay Parini has spent countless hours tracing the footsteps of Herman Melville through the streets of New York City and in the halls and bedroom chambers of Arrowhead, the 19th century author’s Berkshire estate.

“I would just sort of drift around the rooms of that house thinking about his life,” Parini said. “So, I know many of the scenes of his life pretty well.”

A new, 10-feet-tall-by-3.5-feet-wide marquee, made of hand-forged steel will soon stand in front of the THT at the intersection of Merchants Row and South Pleasant streets. The new marquee — to be installed before the end of the year — will provide a very sturdy and classy message board on which the theater will be able to communicate its many events to the Addison County community.
