The Grift to play jukebox style

On Saturday, Feb. 10, a new kind of concert experience comes to Notte in downtown Middlebury (downstairs Two Brothers). Jukebox Time Machine lets you choose the songs that The Grift, Vermont’s premiere party band, will play. That’s right, it’s a live jukebox — no dimes or quarters necessary.

Community chorus begins rehersals for new season this Sunday

The Middlebury College Community Chorus announces a new season to prepare for its spring concerts, slated for performance in Brandon and Middlebury on Mother’s Day weekend May 12-13. Regular rehearsals are Tuesday and Sunday evenings from 7-8:30 p.m.  On Sunday, Feb. 11, the group will meet in the Mahaney Center for the Arts room 221. Rehearsals move to their regular location in Mead Chapel beginning Tuesday, Feb.13.

Middlebury Police Log: Police find no gun in family dispute

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police responded to a report of a domestic dispute in the Court Street area on Feb. 5 that police initially feared might involve a handgun.

Police determined no handgun was involved in the incident, which turned out to be a disagreement between a man and his mother. Police said the man was taken to Porter Hospital for a mental health evaluation.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

•  Helped a person on South Street who was experiencing some mental health problems on Jan. 29.

Jackson painting raffled at Porter fundraiser

The Porter Medical Center Auxiliary will host its annual fundraising event “An Evening for Porter” on Thursday, Feb. 8, from 6-8 p.m., at Edgewater Gallery at the Falls in Middlebury. The highlight of the event will be a raffle drawing for the original Rory Jackson painting, “Dry Quarry Stream,” which was donated by the Edgewater Gallery to support the fundraising efforts of the Auxiliary. The event will feature food and drinks from Two Brothers Tavern, as well as cocktails by Aqua ViTea Spirits.

College seeks OK for a new building that will herald other building projects

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College is seeking town permission to erect a new, 23,000-square-foot building off Shannon Street to accommodate faculty and students temporarily displaced by upcoming renovations to Munroe and Warner halls.

Exhibit looks back at 10 years of visiting print artists

In early January, the Middlebury College Museum of Art opened “Ten Years: The Cameron Print Project.” The exhibit displays 29 works of art produced over the past decade in a series of annual collaborations between visiting artists and advanced printmaking students at the college.

Meet the chef: Nathan Davis of Rough Cut

When you think of China and Chinese food, American-style barbecue probably isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. But Shenzhen (a city with almost 12 million people just outside of Hong Kong) is where chef Nathan Davis got his BBQ chops.

“There are a lot of ex-pats in Shenzhen who want Western food,” said Davis, who returned home to Middlebury in May after six years in China. “It was an upscale and popular place.”

In mid-November, Davis took over as head chef for Middlebury’s own barbecue restaurant Rough Cut.

Group gives kids 'passports' to the great outdoors

ADDISON COUNTY — Do you like spending time outdoors?

Most of us (kids and adults) answer, “Yes!” But when it comes right down to it, we don’t actually spend as much time as we might like outside.

“The statistics show us that about 50 percent of kids today play outside as they did in the ’80s,” sited Andy Paluch, executive director of Come Alive Outside — a non-profit based in Rutland. “There are so many things competing for our attention these days.”
