ACTR receives donation from St. Stephen's Peasant Market

MIDDLEBURY — The Peasant Market of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church recently donated $2,000 to Addison County Transit Resources (ACTR) to help replace aging buses. ACTR plans to put two new 28-passenger buses in service to ensure the travelling public’s safety and meet ridership demands.

BRISTOL — A cabin on a lake in Montana in a national park. No cell phone. No Internet. Little company for most of the 25 days he’ll be there, except a solar-powered laptop and a mountain of research.

For some that might sound like punishment.

But Middlebury College computer science professor — and outdoors and nature writer — Matthew Dickerson considered it a prize to be sought.

MIDDLEBURY — Journalist Amy Goodman brought stories from her on-the-ground reporting to Middebury College this past Wednesday, April 26, delivering a message of hope and faith in independent news media.

The founder and anchor of the radio show and podcast “Democracy Now!” spoke to an almost-full McCullough Center about her 20 years in the field, recounting tales from her new book, released Wednesday, Democracy Now!: 20 Years Covering the Movements Changing America.

Middlebury Police Log: Drunk young man driven home

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police cited Brandon Yandow, 20, of Middlebury for attempting to elude a police officer, negligent driving, and driving with a criminally suspended license, following an incident in the South Main Street area on April 22.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

•  Responded to a domestic dispute at a North Pleasant Street residence on April 17.

•  Served a no-trespass order on April 17 on a man who was not wanted at the Ilsley Public Library.

Middlebury town officials OK temporary bridges plan

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard on Tuesday unanimously approved a plan to demolish the deteriorating Main Street and Merchants Row bridges over the railroad and replace them with temporary spans by early August.

Both bridges could be closed for almost a week late in July.

New dealership owners went from washing cars to calling shots

MIDDLEBURY — What started in 1974 as a used-car lot across from the Middlebury A&W now includes a Ford dealership on Route 7, a commercial store on Foote Street selling trucks and heavy equipment, and a detailing and reconditioning shop back on the original site — all under the G. Stone Motors umbrella.

Along with founder Gardner Stone, now 75, two other Stones have been on the scene since day one: his children, Todd and Darcy Stone.
