MIDDLEBURY — One in 12 households in Vermont could not afford to put food on the table between 2006 and 2008, Joel Berg told a small group of Middlebury College students last Friday.
Berg kicked off Middlebury College’s fall symposium, “American Poverty in Context” at the end of last week in a lunchtime discussion session at the college by addressing an issue that, for Vermonters, hit close to home.

MIDDLEBURY — On Oct. 7 a group of important figures in Vermont’s education system — including education commissioner Armando Vilaseca — gathered at the Middlebury Inn to discuss career and technical programs and the role that philanthropic organizations can play in these programs.
In attendance were representatives of charitable organizations and individual donors, legislators and career and technical program administrators, all there to take a look at the current state of vocational education and what philanthropic institutions can do to help those programs expand their offerings.

Otter Creek seeks permit for brew pub

Posted on October 28, 2010 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — Otter Creek Brewing is seeking the town of Middlebury’s approval to establish a 90-seat, pub-style restaurant and visitors’ center within its brewery at 85 Exchange St.
Brewery officials stressed the new service will have limited hours, a limited menu and should not eat into — but rather, enhance — the economic fortunes of restaurants and shops in downtown Middlebury.
“We know we are good at making beer; we are not looking to show we are culinary experts,” said Otter Creek Brewery brewmaster Mike Gerhart.

MIDDLEBURY — Last fall, Weybridge Elementary School sixth-graders were able to look at and even touch maps that were drawn more than 500 years ago — something that just less than a decade ago would not have been possible.

Middlebury College’s Special Collections archive, where the students were able to engage with the century-old maps, is only just beginning to see the light of day.

By Tamara Hilmes

MIDDLEBURY — The UD-3 school board is welcoming a new Middlebury member and is seeking to fill another vacancy created by the recent resignation of longtime Shoreham member Bill O’Neill.

Quinn Mecham will serve the balance of the term (through next February) of former UD-3 board member Connie Leach of Middlebury, who recently moved out of town. The ID-4 school board, which represents Middlebury, appointed Mecham to the position, which will then be up for grabs on Town Meeting Day next March. Mecham is an assistant professor of political science at Middlebury College.

Local Jewish community marks 30th anniversary

MIDDLEBURY — It was back in June of 1980 that Eli Olinick celebrated what is believed to have been the first Bar Mitzvah ever in Addison County, held in Middlebury College’s Warner Hemicycle.

The traditional Jewish ceremony would prove more than Olinick’s symbolic transition to religious adulthood. It would become the catalyst for the organization of Addison County’s Jewish community, Havurah, which this year is marking its 30th anniversary.

UD-3 board hears from staff, public on budget

Posted on October 21, 2010 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — The UD-3 board on Tuesday heard from more than a dozen teachers and community members who requested that any cuts to the 2011-2012 budget not affect direct educational services to students.

Some advised the board to target extra-curricular activities and administrative positions in the Middlebury district, while others suggested school directors put away the budget cutting knife altogether.

Sabra Field mural dresses up theater

web_sabraandkate4042.jpg

MIDDLEBURY — Vermont artist and Middlebury College alumna Sabra Field stood at the base of the Wright Theater building at her alma mater on Monday, observing the progress of the translation of her linocut print “Cosmic Geometry” into a mural on the eastern wall of the gray building.

The 16 squares of Field’s original print had been but half-applied by midday on Monday — the mural artists were still busily filling in with color what they had blocked out and traced onto the wall once the sun finally appeared over the weekend.

Practice offers alternative in end of life care

web_drbarnard.jpg

MIDDLEBURY — For Middlebury resident Stephanie Smith’s mother, Marthena Smith, slow medicine seemed to be the right fit.

Marthena Smith, who died in June at age 89, enrolled herself in Porter Hospital’s Partners in Palliative and Home Care program the previous December. She had a stomach problem, and it seemed as though she was sick all the time.

“She just made the decision to go to them herself,” Stephanie Smith said. “They empowered both me and my mother to make decisions that were best for her.”

John Irving reads at Mead Chapel

Posted on October 21, 2010 |
By Tamara Hilmes

MIDDLEBURY — After years of wondering and surmising along with her husband, one Monkton resident was finally able to ask John Irving last week if he had, in fact, named his main character of the novel “Cider House Rules” after her husband and his father, both also Homer Wells.

Her husband’s father grew up in an orphanage in Maine, she said into the microphone in the center aisle of Middlebury College’s Mead Chapel on Oct. 13, and she was wondering if Irving had stumbled across the name during his research.
