From West Africa to slavery in the Deep South to white Vermont, Beck book weaves the tale

MIDDLEBURY — Vermont Folklife Center (VFC) founder Jane Beck promised Daisy Turner back in the mid-1980s that she would write a book on Turner’s gripping stories about her family’s odyssey from West Africa, through slavery, to a life of freedom and self sufficiency in the small community of Grafton, Vt.

Now 27 years removed from Daisy Turner’s death at the age of 104, Beck has finally made good on her pledge to her late friend, a master storyteller and the daughter of a slave.

Middlebury professor, dancer to perform Oct. 4

MIDDLEBURY — As part of the campus-wide Celebration of 50 Years of Environmental Education and Leadership at Middlebury, dancer and professor Andrea Olsen will perform her newest work, “Dancing in Wild Places: Seaweed and Ocean Health” on Sunday, Oct. 4, at 2 p.m. in the Dance Theatre of the Kevin P. Mahaney ’84 Center for the Arts. The work represents the final major performance of Olsen’s 33-year career at Middlebury College, before she moves on to a three-year appointment at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey.

Judge tells college to reenroll student

MIDDLEBURY — On Sept. 16, U.S. District Court Senior Judge J. Garvan Murtha ordered Middlebury College to re-enroll an undergraduate student that the college had expelled this summer.

Under the court’s order, the student (going by the pseudonym “John Doe”) will be permitted to attend Middlebury while his lawsuit challenging the expulsion continues.

Filmmakers look at the Great Famine in China, challenge government narrative

MIDDLEBURY — Two Chinese filmmakers will visit the Middlebury College campus this week to show their documentaries about the Great Famine in China. The public is welcome to screenings, which will include question-and-answer sessions with the filmmakers.

The “Great Famine” is the Chinese famine of 1959-1961. An estimated 20 million to 40 million people died in this famine.

Mr. Wu Wenguang and Ms. Zhang Mengqi will be talking about an ongoing project to make documentary films that are oral histories of that time.

Group proposes new hangar for Middlebury airport

Middlebury tunes into Pope's historic speech

MIDDLEBURY — Close to 50 Addison County residents gathered in the Marquis Theater in Middlebury to watch a live simulcast of Pope Francis’ historic address to the U.S. Congress this past Thursday.

The local gathering to watch Francis, the first pope to address Congress, was sponsored by the interfaith Middlebury Area Clergy Association.

The success of any garden is measured by the pleasure it brings to the people who use it. And, when many people use a garden, there is much pleasure to go around.

Hidden behind the walls of the Helen Porter Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Middlebury is a garden that is enjoyed by hundreds of people in sundry ways. It is a garden that serves the entire Helen Porter community — not only the residents and their visitors, but also the many staff and volunteers associated with the nursing home.

WomenSafe nets big grant to battle domestic violence

MIDDLEBURY — WomenSafe has won a $753,166 federal grant that will allow the Middlebury nonprofit to continue its fight against domestic violence and sexual assault in Addison County and neighboring Rochester.

The grant is actually a three-year extension in funding for which WomenSafe first successfully applied through the U.S. Department of Justice’s (DOJ) Office of Violence Against Women back in 2007. It is money the DOJ has earmarked for rural communities needing help in combatting crimes against women — including dating violence and stalking.
