Editor’s note: This article is part of a three-part series on Addison County residents who have sought help from the Quit Tobacco Program at Porter Hospital in order to kick their cigarette habits.

MIDDLEBURY — Fifty-five-year-old Suzanne Gagnon has been smoking for 30 years. She picked up her first cigarette when she was just 20 years old, and soon she was smoking two or more packs a day.

For the past five years, ever since she was diagnosed and treated for laryngitis, Gagnon has battled with her addiction.

By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — Voters in the Addison Central Supervisory Union’s seven towns will be asked on Town Meeting Day to support a 2011-2012 spending plan of $15,643,007, which represents a 2.03-percent decrease in spending compared to this year.

The decrease allows UD-3 — which includes the combined budgets of Middlebury Union Middle School and High School — to meet the state’s “Challenges for Change” directive.

'Night Fires' to be rekindled

Posted on December 9, 2010 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — Abigail Nessen Bengsen, 27, recalled with glee her long involvement with “Night Fires,” a winter solstice celebration in which since 1982 local performers had pierced the year’s darkest night with a creative cornucopia of music, dance, poems and stories from throughout the world.

“My family was involved before I was born,” Bengsen said. “I grew up in it.”

But Night Fires went dark in 2007 when its creator, Lincoln’s Marianne Lust, needed a break from the arduous tasks of staging what was then a traveling performance.

Architect recalls Vt. vernacular

Posted on December 9, 2010 |
By Tamara Hilmes

MIDDLEBURY — Architect Turner Brooks grew up visiting the Ferrisburgh home of family friend Clement Hurd, illustrator of the beloved children’s book “Goodnight Moon.” Brooks still references the whimsical illustrations today when describing his own design work.

“There’s an incredible, strong juxtaposition of the intimate and the infinite,” he said during his recent lecture at Middlebury College, pointing during a slide showing to one of Hurd’s drawings of the bunny’s cozy bedroom with the lone window displaying the infinite night sky.

Planners mull ways to get people out of cars

MIDDLEBURY — Crosswalk signals that tack on extra time when walkers need it, bike lanes with strategically painted lines and symbols, along with pedestrian “refuges” — all of these could soon be integrated into a downtown near you.

Jon Kaplan of the Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) recently presented to the Addison County Regional Planning Commission these and other ways Addison County could implement European bicycle and pedestrian safety strategies into local roadways.

Career Center eyes packaged programs

Posted on December 2, 2010 |
By Andrea Suozzo

MIDDLEBURY — Change is coming to the Patricia A. Hannaford Career Center in Middlebury.
In recent years, enrollment in adult education programs at the technical center has taken a hit, said director Lynn Coale.

He said that a combination of reduced funding for the center’s adult education programs and a lack of funding for students hoping to take courses at the technical center has yielded an overall enrollment decline.

“We’re a fairly small tech center, compared to Rutland or Essex,” said Coale. “I think that we always struggle trying to keep the doors open in continuing education.”

Middlebury orders study to pin down rail station location

Posted on November 29, 2010 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — The town of Middlebury is applying for a $15,000 federal grant to plan for a local, passenger rail station in anticipation of ramped-up train service along the western part of the state.

Middlebury Town Manager Bill Finger said making progress toward a passenger rail station would also likely enhance the community’s chances for landing federal aid to replace the two railroad underpasses on Main Street and Merchants Row. Those two underpass projects have been on the Vermont Agency of Transportation’s to-do list for several years.

MIDDLEBURY — An ad hoc committee studying the feasibility of a major retail-commercial-residential project on town- and college-owned land behind Middlebury’s Ilsley Public Library will update the public on its work early next year.

At issue is an “Economic Development Initiative (EDI)” being crafted by the town and Middlebury College. It’s a project intended to complement the recently completed Cross Street Bridge and the new entrepreneurial opportunities the new downtown structure could present.
