RetailVision to close; 25 Middlebury jobs to be lost

MIDDLEBURY — Magazine sales promotion company RetailVision will close its doors in Middlebury’s industrial park at the end of October, a move that will eliminate around 25 local jobs.

“We did announce last week to our employees in Vermont that we will be shutting down that office by end of October,” Stephanie Justice, chief administrative officer of RetailVision’s Florida-based corporate owner, Source Interlink Companies (SIM), said in an Aug. 9 e-mail response to the Addison Independent.

Now, in his new career as the Rev. Feder of the Champlain Valley Unitarian Universalist Society (CVUUS) in Middlebury, it’s all about getting personal.

Pulp Mill span rebuild on schedule

MIDDLEBURY — Extensive rehabilitation of the historic covered Pulp Mill Bridge is proceeding smoothly and is on target to be completed by November, according to the Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) and Alpine Construction, which is doing the work.

Second annual beverage, cheese fest draws crowd

MIDDLEBURY — Despite Saturday’s searing heat, the second annual Vermont Beer, Wine and Cheese Festival drew about 1,500 paid visitors to Middlebury’s Marble Works, allowing the event to roughly equal the numbers and financial benefits from 2011, organizers said.

Talented singers learn German for Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro"

MIDDLEBURY –– World-class opera usually comes to Addison County but once a year at the June Opera Company of Middlebury performance. And even then it is not usually opera sung entirely in German.

But over the past six weeks 11 singers have studied, prepared and rehearsed  in German for performances here this weekend of Mozart’s “The Marriage of Figaro.”

Windancer center offers physical, mental benefits

MIDDLEBURY — Alyson Young had always been an active person. But that all came to a crashing halt one fateful day in October 2005 when she was involved in a serious car accident.

“My movement became seriously inhibited,” Young recalled. “My pelvis became twisted and rotated. I had to crawl on the floor to move around. It was really frustrating and painful.”

Middlebury credits Guild for town monument

MIDDLEBURY — Marion Guild left Middlebury 71 years ago with some disappointment. She had just seen one of her male bosses take credit for designing the Emma Hart Willard monument that still stands at the top of Main Street in front of the Congregational Church of Middlebury.

Well, Tuesday provided a triumphant return to Middlebury for Guild, now 95, who received belated credit for being the true designer of the monument honoring the person credited for starting women’s collegiate education in the United States.

New downtown gallery joining Middlebury Arts Walk

Galerie Provenance, a new art gallery located at 1 Frog Hollow Alley (previously occupied by BeJewelled), is the newest addition to the monthly event. Galerie Provenance opened mid-July and specializes in American and French art, antiques and accoutrements.

Middlebury warned about potential scam

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury authorities on Friday were put on alert about a woman going door-to-door claiming to be raising money on behalf of the Vermont Electric Power Co. (VELCO) for the Share Heat program that provides fuel assistance for Vermonters. Steve Costello, a spokesman for Green Mountain Power, said the state utilities do not raise Share Heat money through door-to-door campaigns are urging residents to not donate in this manner. Anyone in Middlebury receiving a visit of this nature should call police at 388-3191.
