Middlebury Police Log: Car hits Court Street walker

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police investigated a report of a vehicle striking a pedestrian at the intersection of Court Street and Creek Road on Dec. 19. Police said the pedestrian was taken to Porter Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

•  Were informed that a vehicle had been hit by another vehicle while parked in the Middlebury Union High School parking lot on Dec. 19.

Family duo releases second CD

MIDDLEBURY — While some high school boys are out playing baseball, Aidan Ryan is stuck inside with his dad. Aidan doesn’t mind, though; he and his father, Greg, this fall released their second CD together as the band “They Might be Gypsies,” featuring 16-year-old Aidan on nylon stringed guitar.

“We play together a couple of times a week,” Greg Ryan said. “Whether or not it’s really rehearsing is up for debate. We have a good time.”

UD-3 board eyes 3.1% budget cap

But Paul Bortz uses a different vehicle to transport himself down memory lane — a train. Actually, more than 500 electric and toy trains that he enthusiastically collects and shares with his family and the public.

Pulp Mill Bridge to close Jan. 2

Middlebury grad wins survivor

MIDDLEBURY — Some Middlebury College graduates go on to gain acclaim in science, medicine and politics. On Sunday, one recent graduate stormed to fame on longtime CBS reality TV show “Survivor.”

Sophie Clarke of Willsboro, N.Y., graduated from the college in May and is currently enrolled at the Mount Sinai College of Medicine in New York City. On Sunday, when the final episode of  “Survivor: South Pacific” aired, Clarke beat out the two other finalists and claimed the $1 million prize.

College students take stock of old dam sites

MIDDLEBURY — Vermont’s forgotten dams are mostly small structures tucked away on streams and brooks, once used in small-scale milling operations. Most have been dormant for a century.

Students in the Middlebury College Environmental Studies Senior Seminar analyzed these dams and in a recent presentation led by Catherine Ashcraft and Diane Munroe proposed guidelines for removing or developing the existing infrastructure.

Tenny to leave Middlebury board after 16 years

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury selectboard Chairman John Tenny revealed on Tuesday that he will not seek another three-year term on Town Meeting Day. His retirement from the selectboard comes at the end of a more-than-16-year run during which the town approved and built some major capital projects, including a new police station and the Cross Street Bridge.

Middlebury refines fire station design

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Fire Department and Bread Loaf Corp. architects have put the last major touches on the design of a renovated and expanded Seymour Street fire station that will be put to the voters at Town Meeting Day in March as part of a $4.8 million bond issue.

The most dramatic design change, influenced by local residents and members of the Middlebury Design Advisory Committee, is the relocation of the new elevator shaft from the building’s exterior to its interior.

College's endowment rebounds

MIDDLEBURY — After a turbulent couple of years, it looks like Middlebury College is out of the woods financially.

That’s according to Patrick Norton, vice president and treasurer at the college. Norton said that although the school’s endowment has rebounded to $825 million from its low point in March 2009, the financial crisis has changed the way the institution handles its money.
