HOPE plan for housing not funded

MIDDLEBURY — Helping Overcome Poverty’s Effects (HOPE) officials, unable to secure key federal grants, have had to scuttle a plan to transform the office building at 61 Court St. into a boarding house for low-income residents.

ACSU business manager search continues

MIDDLEBURY — The Addison Central Supervisory Union (ACSU) has hired a consultant to serve as its financial officer in the wake of two recent searches that thus far have failed to yield a new business manager.

Gail Conley, ACSU interim superintendent, confirmed the district has hired former Essex North Superintendent Wayne Murray to serve as the district’s financial officer on a part-time basis while the search for a new business manager continues.

Economic promoter supported by report

MIDDLEBURY —Middlebury would be well served in hiring an economic development director to actively recruit new businesses to Addison County’s shire town, according to local stakeholders.

That’s the conclusion of a Middlebury College student hired by the town this summer to research its economic development policy and determine whether it would be wise to hire a director to spearhead commercial, retail and industrial growth.

Gleaning program helps fill a void at food shelf

MIDDLEBURY — Area farmers and a capable Middlebury College intern are working to fill some of the empty space at the Helping Overcome Poverty’s Effects (HOPE) food shelf this summer through a “gleaning” program that is yielding a bumper crop of fresh vegetables and fruit.

Middlebury fire station vote set; impact on property taxes gauged

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Volunteer Fire Department’s quest to upgrade its two fire stations passed two major hurdles early this week, as the town’s development review board gave a thumbs-up to the $4.875 million plan and the selectboard set Sept. 27 as the first of two community-wide votes on the project.

The project, if ultimately approved by voters on Town Meeting Day, would add 8,100 square feet of space onto the southern end of the Seymour Street fire station, in the form of a single-story, four-bay addition.

Career Center teachers' pact ratified

MIDDLEBURY — Patricia J. Hannaford Career Center (PHCC) teachers will return to work this fall with the security of a new, three-year contract that requires them to pay a greater proportion of their health care premiums but assures them some modest wage increases.

Middlebury Methodists welcome new pastor

MIDDLEBURY — The Rev. Elisabeth Smith’s lengthy pastoral career has taken her to churches stretching from South Carolina to Massachusetts.

She is now preaching the Gospel in Vermont, as the new pastor at the Middlebury United Methodist Church (MUMC).

Smith, 50, officially began her new duties July 3. She replaces the Rev. Jill Colley Robinson, who recently took over leadership of the Lebanon (N.H.) United Methodist Church after eight years with the MUMC.

Sullivan named 'Firefighter of the Year'

MIDDLEBURY — Addison County firefighters proved not only stellar hosts for the 2011 Vermont State Firefighters Association (VSFA) annual convention this past weekend, they also took a majority of statewide awards conferred this year by the organization.

Five area firefighters — three from Bristol and two from Middlebury — were called to the stage at the VSFA’s annual awards ceremony held at the Middlebury American Legion Hall on Saturday, July 23.
