Falling bricks prompt Middlebury to close Bakery Lane

MIDDLEBURY — Bakery Lane will be closed at its northern entrance (fronting Main Street) for up to a month beginning Monday, Sept. 12, to accommodate repairs to the brick façade of the Dyer Block, Middlebury officials confirmed on Friday.

Area agencies pool funds to aid youth

MIDDLEBURY — The Vermont Agency of Human Services (AHS) has picked two Addison County nonprofits to team up in delivering mental health and child care services more cost-effectively and efficiently to citizens ranging in age from birth to 22.

The collaboration, if successful, could serve as an operational blueprint for human service agencies statewide as Vermont state government looks to pare back its expenses.

Sanders offers his own jobs plan at Middlebury Labor Day event

MIDDLEBURY — U.S. Sen. Bernard Sanders, I-Vt., marked Labor Day with a sobering message for workers: Barring an abrupt change in the federal government’s economic policies, the nation’s unemployment problems will worsen and household incomes will go down.

Sanders made his remarks before a capacity crowd at Middlebury’s St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, an audience that had assembled for a Labor Day dinner and rally sponsored by the Vermont AFL-CIO and several other statewide union groups.

Civil War play to be staged in Middlebury

Rutland DMV offices moved to Middlebury courthouse

MIDDLEBURY — The Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles will have an expanded presence in the Addison County Courthouse as a result of flood damage from Tropical Storm Irene.

The Vermont Department of Buildings and General Services early last week authorized the temporary relocation of Rutland County DMV offices to the Middlebury courthouse. That became necessary after Irene-related flooding heavily damaged DMV offices in adjacent Rutland County.

Chicken project imparts valuable lessons

MIDDLEBURY — Mary Hogan Elementary School fifth-graders hatched them, Patricia A. Hannaford Career Center agribusiness students raised them and Middlebury College students will eat them.

Without leaving the town of Middlebury, the 203 chickens of the Chick-to-Plate project have been teachers to more than 200 students — by career center Director Lynn Coale’s count — and now, will be dinner to hundreds more.

Route 125 in Ripton could be open Saturday

RIPTON — State transportation officials on Friday said Route 125 from East Middlebury to the Hancock town line could be open to local traffic as soon as Saturday, Sept. 3.

The road suffered several washouts in last Sunday’s Tropical Storm Irene-related flooding. Traffic was rerouted via the Dugway and North Branch Road.

Riverside businesses in Middlebury stave off rising waters

The crest of the Otter Creek River is coming slowly but surely through Addison County, having hit Leicester late yesterday and now approaching downtown Middlebury. The U.S. Geological Survey projects the crest to reach Middlebury between midnight and 2 a.m. tonight.

Rt. 125 washed out in several spots; repairs under way

RIPTON/MIDDLEBURY — In a scene somewhat reminiscent of the flooding of August 2008, Route 125 from East Middlebury to Ripton experienced washouts in three locations as Tropical Storm Irene ripped through Addison County Sunday.

In one location, the Middlebury River took out a swath of guardrail, noted Ripton Selectman Richard Collitt.

Festival on-the-Green needs more helpers

MIDDLEBURY — For 33 years, organizers of the Middlebury Festival on-the-Green have been able to draw a steady stream of talented entertainers to the heart of Addison County’s shire town for a week of free music and family fun.

Now organizers are appealing for an infusion of new talent within their own ranks in order to keep the annual festival successful and vibrant into the future.

“We are at an energy crossroads,” said Festival on-the-Green President Gale Hurd.
