Bluebird wins chili cook-off crown

MIDDLEBURY — Although Burlington’s Bluebird Tavern walked away from Saturday’s Vermont Chili Festival in downtown Middlebury with the banner for Best Overall Chili, a number of local vendors and organizations also became winners in one of the six categories at the annual event.

MUMS' Duktig steps down as principal

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury Union Middle School Principal Inga Duktig resigned last week, citing her readiness to “transition to the next chapter of my career as an educator.”

Duktig’s resignation takes effect on July 1, though Friday, March 9, was her last day on the job. That’s because she was granted a paid leave of absence for the balance of the academic year, according to Addison Central Supervisory Union interim Superintendent Gail Conley.

eCorp faces new challenges

MIDDLEBURY — The Vermont Department of Labor is representing at least five former eCorp English workers who have filed complaints against the company for failure to pay back wages.

As the Addison Independent went to press on Friday, eCorp management was working to make good on those previously bounced paychecks; two complainants confirmed on Thursday that they had been cut new checks.

Business fund wins approval in shire town

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury voters at their annual meeting approved a 2012-2013 municipal budget of $8,420,920 and agreed to establish a business development fund (BDF) to help attract new businesses and jobs to Addison County’s shire town.

More than 200 voters packed Middlebury’s municipal gym to consider a seven-article warning dominated by the budget and the proposed development fund.

Nuovo, Shashok returned to Midd board seats

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury residents on Tuesday voted to return incumbent selectboard members Victor Nuovo and Susan Shashok to office, and also added Gary Baker to the fold.

Nuovo (613 tallies) and Shashok (520) were the top vote getters in a five-way race for two three-year seats. Finishing out of the running were former Selectman Don Keeler (461 votes), Eric Murray (272) and Brian Bauer (239).

Baker was unopposed in his run for a one-year term, the balance of a term vacated by former Selectwoman Janelle Ashley.

Voters back MUMS roof

MIDDLEBURY — Addison Central Supervisory Union residents on Tuesday overwhelmingly endorsed a $1 million bond to replace the failing asphalt shingle roof at Middlebury Union Middle School with a standing seam metal room.

Townspeople in Bridport, Cornwall, Ripton, Salisbury, Shoreham, Weybridge and Middlebury collectively voted 1,881-899 in favor of the 20-year bond issue.

“We are pleased,” UD-3 board Chairman Leonard Barrett said, adding he was also gratified by the district’s 1,844-919 endorsement of the UD-3 budget (see related story).

Senior plays a tradition in this house

MIDDLEBURY — You can safely say that the theater has been a family affair for the Smalls, and two generations of the clan are playing a big role in this year’s Middlebury Union High School senior play, “Fiddler on the Roof.”

Shannon Bohler-Small is directing, while daughter (and MUHS senior) Chenoah Small is serving as stage manager for the production.

Middlebury's Gailer School to close doors

MIDDLEBURY — The Gailer School, an innovative independent middle and high school in Middlebury, will close its doors for good this spring, with leaders citing declining enrollment and a strained budget as the primary reasons for the difficult decision.

“Between the struggling economy and the shrinking demographics of Addison County, it has made it really difficult for the private secondary school to recruit enough students,” said Gailer Headmaster Lonny Edwards.
