Meet the singers of Il Trittico this weekend

MIDDLBEURY — Opera Company of Middlebury (OCM) has assembled an extraordinary cast of professionals for their June production of Puccini’s rarely performed gem, “Il Trittico.” Fourteen singers have joined this year’s company. On May 21, OCM offers an up-close, personal preview of the singers in a Meet the Singers concert and reception at the Unitarian Universalist Society in Middlebury this Sunday at 5 p.m.

Vt. Folklife Center will host storytelling workshop this Friday

MIDDLEBURY — The Vermont Folklife Center (VFC) will host a day-long workshop on Friday, May 19, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. “Storytelling for Social Change” will introduce attendees to collaborative documentary and storytelling skills, interviewing skills, and the design and planning of project ideas. The workshop will be held at the VFC headquarters in Middlebury, at 88 Main St.

Middlebury Police Log: Bristol woman cited for domestic assault

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police cited Stephanie L. Dugan, 33, of Bristol for domestic assault, after she allegedly struck a family member in the Court Street area on May 12.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

•  Investigated a suspected break-in at a Court Street apartment on May 8. Police said the tenant believes someone got into her home through a window via a fire escape. The tenant is searching her home to see if anything is missing.

Super-large photos, audio interviews on exhibit

MIDDLEBURY — To celebrate the opening of their new exhibit, the Vermont Folklife Center will host a public reception and gallery talk on Thursday, May 25, from 4-7 p.m. “The Dames” is an exhibition of large format color portraits paired with audio interview recordings, featuring members of the National Society of Colonial Dames of America in the state of Vermont.

Complimentary locally sourced food and drink, including an assortment of “tea sandwiches,” craft cheeses, produce, and more will be served. The gallery talk will commence at 5:45 p.m.

CVUUS to host rhubarb festival June 3

MIDDLEBURY — The eighth annual Rhubarb Festival is comingSaturday, June 3, to the Champlain Valley Unitarian Universalist Society (CVUUS) on Duane Court in Middlebury, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

There will be an abundance of homemade rhubarb pies — but come early for strawberry-rhubarb. Sweets and savories will also be for sale. Acafé,opening at10:30, will offer a sandwich or salad lunch for $5, including a dessert of rhubarb crisp with (optional) whipped cream, and choice of coffee, tea, lemonade.

Rail bridges project draws criticism: Middlebury economy put into focus

MIDDLEBURY — Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) officials converged on Middlebury Thursday to ask local folks their thoughts about a $52 million plan to replace the town’s two crumbling downtown rail bridges.

They got an earful.

Most of it was complaints about the potential economic impacts of a four-year construction process that some local merchants said they’re not sure they’ll be able to survive.

MIDDLEBURY — Porter Medical Center CEO Dr. Fred Kniffin has always compared the hospital’s affiliation process with University of Vermont Health Network to a courtship.

There was an initial period of “dating” last year when Porter was considering the possibility of joining UVMHN’s family of five medical institutions in Northern New York and Vermont.

Emilo-Dragon certified as CPIA

MIDDLEBURY— Tina Emilo-Dragon, insurance agent for NFP P&C in Middlebury, has earned the Certified Professional Insurance Agent (CPIA) professional designation. She was awarded the designation by the American Insurance Marketing and Sales Society after completing its three-day course.

The CPIA designation is marketed as a sign of professionalism, commitment to professional training and results, and technical knowledge.

Emilo-Dragon, an 11-year veteran of the insurance industry resides in East Middlebury.

Rotary raises funds for nonprofits via online auction

MIDDLEBURY — Members of the Middlebury Rotary club invite the public to check out the organization’s 9th annual online auction at biddingforgood.com/middleburyrotary. The auction includes 200 items that were all donated by generous businesses and individuals.

Auction items range from great local dining to overnight stays at inns and B&Bs to artwork to goods and services of all sorts.

Proceeds from the auction are distributed to local non-profit organizations.
