Lincoln residents to vote on school spending plan

Posted on April 29, 2010 |
By Kathryn Flagg

LINCOLN — Lincoln residents on Monday night will weigh in on a proposed 2010-2011 school year spending plan two months after a vote on the Lincoln Community School budget was postponed at the town’s annual meeting in early March.

The budget will require a two-part vote because per-pupil spending in the school last year exceeded the state average by 1 percent, and this year’s budget is greater than last year’s budget adjusted for inflation.

Lincoln selectboard to weigh town plan

Posted on April 29, 2010 |
By Kathryn Flagg

LINCOLN — The Lincoln selectboard is expected to approve a new version of the town plan next month, paving the way for the town’s planning commission to forge ahead with long-awaited changes to Lincoln zoning regulations.

The selectboard has scheduled a final public hearing on the plan for May 18 at 6 p.m. at the Lincoln town clerk’s office. The hearing comes after the board mistakenly voted to adopt the plan earlier this spring, but realized soon after that they hadn’t scheduled the formal final hearing necessary to adopt the plan.

Company helps elders live at home

Posted on April 8, 2010 |
By Kathryn Flagg

LINCOLN — Bern Terry wants his clients to think of him like the family nephew: friendly, available and ready to step in when an elder needs a little extra help around the home.

That concept of flexible, personal home care is at the heart of a new for-profit senior care business expanding this month to Addison County. As the company’s name implies, Extended Family steps in to help senior citizens remain independent and in their homes — much like a family member or neighbor might pitch in as someone ages.

Lincoln voters consider school budget

Posted on April 5, 2010 |
By Kathryn Flagg

LINCOLN — School board officials in Lincoln last week warned a proposed 2010-2011 school year spending plan after a vote on the budget was put on hold at the town’s annual meeting in early March.

The new spending plan calls for $1,609,535 in expenditures. According to Addison Northeast Supervisory Union business manager, the educational spending in the budget is virtually unchanged from the $1.4 million figure presented to the town in early March.

Artist forges reputation for smithing

LINCOLN — Ask blacksmith Brian Anderson, and the South Starksboro metalworker will tell you that a cool, hard lump of iron and a soft piece of clay aren’t as different as you might think.

Sure, you may have to heat iron to 2,500 degrees before it becomes malleable — and malleable only with the force of a hammer and tongs. But at that point, he said, the distinction between hard and soft, clay and iron, all but disappears.

Young actors explore migrant experience

LINCOLN — At first glance, the classroom-turned-dressing room at the Lincoln Community School looked on Tuesday night like the staging grounds of your average elementary school play.

Fifth- and sixth-graders bustled to and fro, snatching up pieces of their costumes and patiently waiting turns at makeshift hair and makeup stations. Teacher Alice Leeds darted from school gymnasium to classroom, from classroom to gymnasium, herding volunteer musicians into place as the students prepared for their first dress rehearsal.

Lincoln board decides against floating school bond

Posted on January 4, 2010 |
By Kathryn Flagg

LINCOLN — The Lincoln school board last week decided to postpone a bond to fund school repairs, pushing back a possible vote on the bond until at least March 2011.

The Dec. 21 decision came after several weeks of hasty discussions regarding possible repairs to the Lincoln Community School’s aging building, which the board discussed for several hours with community members at a well-attended Dec. 16 public meeting.

Lincoln auditor resigns post, runs for selectboard

LINCOLN — A Lincoln auditor has resigned his post, and citing frustration with the way business is done in town is throwing his cap into the ring for the March 2010 race for a three-year term on the selectboard.

Elwin Isham was elected to serve as an auditor on Town Meeting Day this year. But now, because of his decision to run for the selectboard, Isham said he’s resigning his post to avoid any potential conflict of interest.

Lincoln Library earns accolades

Posted on November 30, 2009 |
By Kathryn Flagg

LINCOLN — After what’s been a tough year for the Lincoln Library, good news arrived at the little mountain outpost earlier this month: The Lincoln Library was one of 258 libraries nationwide lauded by Library Journal as “star” libraries.

The library earned the honor, which is based on statistics about circulation, programs, and library use, for the second year in a row. This year, just three other Vermont libraries — the Sherburne Library in Killington, the Craftsbury Public Library, and the South Hero Community Library — also earned the Library Journal recognition.
