HANCOCK/GRANVILLE — “Look, headlights,” shouted someone in the crowd gathered at the Hancock Town Hall late Wednesday afternoon.

Every one of the 70-some town residents at the impromptu town meeting turned to look, craning their necks and inching out of their seats to catch a view of the bright orange Central Vermont Public Service truck rolling through town.

RIPTON — State transportation officials on Friday said Route 125 from East Middlebury to the Hancock town line could be open to local traffic as soon as Saturday, Sept. 3.

The road suffered several washouts in last Sunday’s Tropical Storm Irene-related flooding. Traffic was rerouted via the Dugway and North Branch Road.

GRANVILLE/HANCOCK — As most Addison County residents turned to recovery and repairs early this week, many Granville and Hancock residents were still trying to make do without phones, electricity and passable roads.

The only two Addison County towns on the eastern slope of the Green Mountains were among the communities hit hardest when Tropical Storm Irene dumped a massive amount of rain on Vermont Sunday.

GRANVILLE/HANCOCK — Granville and Hancock last month were granted a reprieve in a search for a new supervisory union — for now, at least.

In a March 2010 Town Meeting Day vote, residents of Bethel and Rochester voted to leave the Windsor Northwest Supervisory Union. Since those towns contain the only two high schools in the supervisory union, the resolutions prompted a more-than-yearlong study on closing the supervisory union by the state Board of Education.

GRANVILLE / HANCOCK — Not two years after Hancock and Granville shuttered their shared elementary school, school boards in both towns are facing yet another potential closure.

This time, it is the Windsor Northwest Supervisory Union (WNwSU) that is mulling its options following a March 2010 vote by Bethel and Rochester residents to withdraw from the union.

HANCOCK — Hancock, Ripton and East Middlebury residents are breathing easier in wake of the capture, at the Middlebury Snow Bowl, of a man whom authorities have termed a “strong suspect” in the recent murder of Kathleen Smith, 50, of Burlington.
Residents along Route 125 had been on high alert following the discovery of Smith’s abandoned car off Texas Falls Road in Hancock, just a few days before her body was discovered in her home on Burlington’s Park Street on Oct. 18.

HANCOCK — Work goes quickly when you have many hands.

On Saturday, May 15, trail maintenance volunteers on the Bread Loaf section of the Long Trail discovered the truth of that saying. The 16 workers spread out to clear fallen trees, branches and debris on five miles of trail, all the way from Route 125 at the top of the Middlebury Gap south to Worth Mountain. In under three hours, the trail was clear and the group was ready for lunch.

Hancock, Granville reflect after schools close doors

Posted on February 4, 2010 |
By Kathryn Flagg

HANCOCK/GRANVILLE — These days, the tiny villages of Hancock and Granville are ghost towns.

At least, that’s what they’re deemed in educational parlance. When the two towns last year decided to shut down their joint Village School, they joined a growing number of small towns in Vermont that have decided to close their schools and tuition their students to schools beyond the towns’ borders.

By KATHRYN FLAGG
HANCOCK — “Our school will shine tonight,” belted out students of the Hancock and Granville village schools last Wednesday night, taking the stage in the packed Hancock Town Hall to the thunderous applause of parents, teachers old and new, and alumni of the tiny village schools.

Wearing t-shirts emblazoned with pictures of both the Hancock and Granville schoolhouses, the 32 students threw themselves into their last hurrah: an end-of-year concert that held a special note of finality this year.
