White River Valley towns bounce back from Irene

GRANVILLE/HANCOCK — These days, business is good at the Old Hancock Hotel, which sits on Route 100 mere yards from the bridge that rising waters swept away on Aug. 28, 2011.

That’s not to say the past year hasn’t been a struggle for Diane Isaacson, who runs the hotel, restaurant and bakery. As Tropical Storm Irene passed through and the rain turned brooks to raging rivers that swept through houses and fields, Isaacson’s basement was inundated, her water and power supply destroyed.

Connect-the-Dots-snowballs-at-Bowl.jpg

HANCOCK — On Saturday, May 5, people across the globe held up dots — small, large, cut out or painted — asking their fellow citizens to “connect the dots” to climate change. Demonstrations went on underwater in the Marshall Islands, on the sides of cliffs in South Africa and on the last patch of snow on the Allen Trail at the Middlebury College Snow Bowl in Hancock.

Hancock apartments stay affordable

Posted on January 5, 2012 |
By John Flowers

HANCOCK — The Addison County Community Trust (ACCT) will acquire and renovate Hancock’s most prominent affordable housing apartment building, thereby preserving the low-cost rental units for at least the next 20 years.

At issue is the five-unit Mountain View project at 123 Route 125, which for the past 30 years has accommodated low-income tenants under the federal Section 8 housing program. That program pays rental subsidies for tenants earning less than 50 percent of the area median household income, which is currently $35,750 for a family of four.

Hancock projects moving forward

Posted on November 23, 2011 |
By Andrea Suozzo

HANCOCK — On Nov. 15, the town of Hancock took another step toward recovery from Tropical Storm Irene when it settled on a contractor to repair a damaged bridge on the lower section of Churchville Road.

Town officials and Phelps Engineering Inc., awarded the bid to Champlain Construction at a selectboard meeting that Tuesday, for a project total of $259,688.90. The town expects that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will pay a large portion of that cost, while the rest will come from the town’s road budget.

HANCOCK/GRANVILLE — More than a dozen people crammed into Hancock’s town office on Oct. 18 to urge the selectboard to take steps to open the still-closed Upper Churchville Road.

Nearly two months after Tropical Storm Irene hit Vermont, Granville and Hancock — the two Addison County towns hit hardest by the storm — are still finding it impossible to restore traffic on all town roads before the snow flies.

Valley towns start on slow road to recovery

GRANVILLE/HANCOCK — Three weeks after flooding from Tropical Storm Irene cut off road access, phone lines and electricity service to the White River Valley, the two easternmost towns in Addison County are marking small improvements in the valley each day.

As residents of Granville and Hancock begin to tabulate damage, officials from the Federal Emergency Management Agency are fanning out across the county and working with homeowners, town officials and business owners to help them apply for disaster assistance.

GRANVILLE/HANCOCK — Though some might argue that it’s not an ideal time to open a store on Route 100 in Granville, with access still restricted by flood damage, Daniel Sargeant disagrees.

In fact, he said, the crowd that turned out to the grand opening of the Granville General Store on Thursday just goes to show how much the town-wide bonds have strengthened in the wake of the damage wrought by Tropical Storm Irene.

GRANVILLE / HANCOCK — As inhabitants of the White River Valley tried to pull their lives together after floods from Tropical Storm Irene last week tore up roads, knocked out power and isolated residents, Vermonters who live on the western side of the Green Mountains donated supplies and went in person in large numbers to help out.

Those offering support included local firefighters, college students and human service organizations.
