Ferrisburgh baker builds low-cost windmill

FERRISBURGH — When Erik Andrus began milling his own flour, the Ferrisburgh farmer and baker noticed a sharp spike in his electricity bill.

His mill — imported from Europe, and one of the most energy efficient models available — was running for 12 and sometimes 16 hours a day, grinding the wheat that would soon be turned into bread. The electricity bill at Boundbrook Farm and the Good Companion Bakery jumped as much as 50 percent.

Smart makes movie magic

FERRISBURGH — Gerianne Smart first got to know Walter Hacks in the milking parlor of a Waterbury Center dairy.

Moving among the cows, dairy farmer George Woodard told his friend about Hacks in fits and spurts: The fictional character was 11 years old, a tenacious Vermont farm boy infatuated with Westerns and a speed demon on a bicycle.

It turned out that Hacks and his story had been rattling around in Woodard’s head for some time — and it wasn’t long before Smart, a Ferrisburgh resident, was equally infatuated.

NORTH FERRISBURGH — One North Ferrisburgh dairy farm is considering reviving the dwindling tradition of bottling and marketing its own milk in the hopes of escaping the economic uncertainty of the bulk milk market.

And now and then, there’s an advancement in the field of sugaring — like the “check valves” that many sugarmakers are using this year for the first time to increase production (see story, Page 18) — that changes the business of sugarmaking just enough to get everyone talking.

Trust may buy, upgrade trailer park in Waltham

WALTHAM — The Addison County Community Trust (ACCT) is seeking funding for and the support of the town of Waltham to buy and rebuild Gevry Trailer Park as a permanent site for 14 new affordable manufactured homes.

The 2.3-acre park sits on Maple Street on the Vergennes city line and has frontage on Otter Creek. The park’s last tenant moved out last year, said ACCT Executive Director Terry McKnight, who has had his eye on the site for years as a place to provide housing for moderate- and low-income families and seniors.

Two vie for Ferrisburgh board

FERRISBURGH — Although races for town offices are few and far between in Addison County’s northwestern quadrant, Ferrisburgh voters have a choice between two candidates for the town selectboard: incumbent Bob Jenkins and challenger Kurt Plank.

Jenkins, originally appointed to the board to fill a vacancy, is running for election for the second time. Plank is seeking office for the first time.

Community rallies for a creative Haiti benefit

FERRISBURGH — Porter Hospital midwife Martha Redpath had just returned to her Ferrisburgh home from a long night attending two births when husband Gary Lange asked what she would like to do for her 52nd birthday, which was coming up a couple days later on Feb. 3.

What Redpath ended up getting for her birthday — albeit belatedly on Feb. 13 — could be called priceless, although it came with a figure: $11,116.

Midwives improve chances for healthy births in Haiti

FERRISBURGH — A successful fund-raising event hosted by Ferrisburgh residents Gary Lange and Martha Redpath benefited Midwives for Haiti, a nonprofit group working with Haitian authorities and other nonprofits to improve the chances of that nation’s mothers to have healthy childbirths.

Midwives for Haiti is the “featured cause of the month” at midwifesupplies.com for February, and has ramped up its efforts in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake that struck the Caribbean nation, the poorest in the Western hemisphere.

Ferrisburgh officials propose 3-percent hike in municipal budget

FERRISBURGH — Ferrisburgh selectmen have proposed a 2010-2011 budget that, including charitable donations to be decided by residents on Town Meeting Day, would add about a half-cent to the town’s property tax rate. That increase would translate to $5 per $100,000 of assessed value.

Including about $57,700 of charitable requests, selectmen are proposing increasing town spending from about $1.52 million to $1.565 million.

That increase of about $45,500 translates to roughly 3 percent.

Ferrisburgh school bond driving up tax rate, budget

FERRISBURGH — The Ferrisburgh Central School board has adopted a $3.05 million spending proposal for the upcoming school year that includes a major increase, one that is being driven by the first year of payments on last summer’s $1.5 million school upgrade project.

In all, the increase is about $190,400, or 6.66 percent, over current spending.

Of that, $130,000 will go toward making bond payments. That amount alone would boost FCS spending by 4.55 percent, if voters approve the board’s proposal on Town Meeting Day.
