FERRISBURGH — A fire that started at about 10 o’clock on Sunday night burned to the ground the rear third of a Route 7 building in Ferrisburgh and badly damaged the rest of it. The conflagration destroyed many valuable tractors, cars and equipment stored there, and it is forcing a marine sales and service business renting space there — Eriksen’s Crow’s Nest Marina — to relocate.

FERRISBURGH — Kathy Douglas’ fifth-grade students at Ferrisburgh Central School are hoping the Vermont Legislature will see the light.

More specifically, the members of her class would like lawmakers to approve traffic lights at the intersection of Route 7 and Little Chicago Road, just a few hundred yards away from their school.

Local representatives Diane Lanpher (D-Vergennes) and Greg Clark (R-Vergennes) recently accepted the students’ invitation to meet with them.

FERRISBURGH — A part of the nation’s history — or at least a fanciful version of a local legend — will come to life at Ferrisburgh Central School on Friday morning.

At 10:30 a.m., the 17 members of kindergarten teacher Josh Brooks’ class will present their version of how American Commodore Thomas MacDonough outfoxed the British at the mouth of Otter Creek.

In the pupils’ short play, MacDonough receives help from, among others, a fictional farm boy, George Washington, and Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Boys.

FERRISBURGH — Ferrisburgh selectmen on Tuesday approved a roughly $1.619 million town budget for fiscal year 2013, but on Town Meeting Day Ferrisburgh voters will have the option of adding up to $79,000 to that bottom line.

The selectboard’s spending proposal does not include about $29,000 of charitable donations that Ferrisburgh residents typically back in March, plus two articles that would create capital funds: $30,000 for the town’s fire department and $30,000 for the public works department.

FERRISBURGH — From a distance, the vertical green panels revolving in a back field at Boundbrook Farm in Ferrisburgh look more like an art installation than a piece of farm equipment.

But don’t be deceived: Come spring, the unconventional windmill will pump as many as 150 gallons of water a minute into farmer Erik Andrus’s 5-acre rice paddy, day in and day out.

FERRISBURGH — Only a pending delivery and the remote possibility of warm weather remain as hurdles for a planned skating rink next to Ferrisburgh Central School.

Given that it is late December and rink organizer Tim Bicknell said a needed plastic liner should arrive any day, residents from Ferrisburgh and neighboring towns with any luck should be able to lace up their skates for the town’s newest recreation option sometime next week.
