Ferrisburgh board adopts budget; taxes seen stable

FERRISBURGH — Ferrisburgh selectmen on Tuesday approved a roughly $1.619 million town budget for fiscal year 2013, but on Town Meeting Day Ferrisburgh voters will have the option of adding up to $79,000 to that bottom line.

The selectboard’s spending proposal does not include about $29,000 of charitable donations that Ferrisburgh residents typically back in March, plus two articles that would create capital funds: $30,000 for the town’s fire department and $30,000 for the public works department.

Ferrisburgh farmer turns back time to generate power

FERRISBURGH — From a distance, the vertical green panels revolving in a back field at Boundbrook Farm in Ferrisburgh look more like an art installation than a piece of farm equipment.

But don’t be deceived: Come spring, the unconventional windmill will pump as many as 150 gallons of water a minute into farmer Erik Andrus’s 5-acre rice paddy, day in and day out.

Citizen-backed Ferrisburgh rink ready to go

FERRISBURGH — Only a pending delivery and the remote possibility of warm weather remain as hurdles for a planned skating rink next to Ferrisburgh Central School.

Given that it is late December and rink organizer Tim Bicknell said a needed plastic liner should arrive any day, residents from Ferrisburgh and neighboring towns with any luck should be able to lace up their skates for the town’s newest recreation option sometime next week.

Ferrisburgh land sale deadline extended

FERRISBURGH — Ferrisburgh selectmen and the contracted buyer of town-owned land earlier this month reached an agreement to extend for three months a key purchase contingency of the $375,000 contract.

The original terms of the Aug. 1 deal between the town and Montpelier’s Eastern Development Corp. for a 34.9-acre parcel at the junction of Routes 7 and 22A gave the buyer until Nov. 15 — this past Tuesday — to market its still-undisclosed plans for the property after the sale.

Vt. struggles to satisfy local meat demand

FERRISBURGH — It’s not a glamorous industry, but these days, the services of Vermont Livestock Slaughter and Processing in Ferrisburgh are in high demand.

“Right now, we’re booking into fall of 2012,” said Carl Cushing, owner and a retired state meat inspector. “We turn away about as much as we do.”

Ferrisburgh signs deal to sell land

FERRISBURGH — After months of talks, Ferrisburgh selectmen and a corporation with a Montpelier mailing address have struck a deal for the sale of the town’s 34.9-acre parcel at the junction of Routes 7 and 22A.

The purchase-and-sale contract between Ferrisburgh and Eastern Development Corp., signed Aug. 1, is for the full price for which the property was listed in September 2010, $375,000, and the buyer paid a $15,000 deposit to take the land off the market.
