Author’s note: This is the first of a series of essays or reflections about a book written two and a half millennia ago by Plato, the great philosopher. It is titled “Laws” and is his last and longest work. According to a reliable tradition, when Plato died, in 347 BCE, he had finished a draft of the whole work; it was edited and published posthumously by Philip of Opus, Plato’s secretary, a member of Plato’s Academy and a philosopher.

Slideshow: Orwell Town Meeting Day 2010

On Town Meeting Day 2010, Orwell residents gathered at the town hall to vote on the town and school budgets, a bond for school heating system repairs, several contested elections for town positions and a new town truck.

The Independent was there to capture some shots of the day, and to hear town select board member Carla Ochs and a number of other town residents weigh in on the day's significance.

Demolition of the Champlain Bridge

A siren cut through Monday morning’s gray, flurry-filled sky above the Champlain Bridge and suddenly the anticipatory chatter among the assembled masses waned to a collective murmur.

In an instant, the wintry tableau before them was shattered by a loud thud, punctuated by a series of brilliant yellow and red flashes. Like a sand castle hit by a tsunami, the bridge dissolved into Lake Champlain from beneath a rising plume of thick, angry smoke, debris and dust.

VUHS students create anti-alcohol video

VERGENNES UNION HIGH School students and advisors from the Assets Group recently worked on an under-age drinking public service announcement with the sponsorship of the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Vergennes. The PSA will be shown at a variety of upcoming events.

Opening of the Champlain Bridge

On August 26, 1929, Allen Beach recorded silent video footage of the opening of the Champlain Bridge. Now, 80 years later, officials say that the bridge will be demolished within the month. View footage of the bridge opening below, and read the related article here.

Behind the scenes at "The Music Man"

Meredith Wilson's classical musical about traveling salesman Harold Hill and a small town in Iowa marched onto the Town Hall Theater stage last week, performing to audiences that sold out as many as three weeks before the show opened.

The musical, directed by Doug Anderson and featuring a cast of 46, was months in the making, and Addison Independent photographer Trent Campbell tagged along from auditions to opening night. His photos, as well as Anderson's commentary about the musical, are collected in our behind-the-scenes look at the making of the "The Music Man."

Oklahoma at Mount Abe (Slideshow)

The Independent took an early look at Mount Abraham High School's production of "Oklahoma!" More than 100 Abraham students will be on stage in Bristol starting Thursday night for the school’s production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s classic musical “Oklahoma!” The show, the first collaboration for Rodgers and Hammerstein, garnered a special Pulitzer Prize after it opened on Broadway in 1943. Mount Abraham also produced the show in 1981 and 1995. The 2009 show runs Thursday through Saturday at 7:30 p.m. with a 2 p.m. matinee on Saturday.

Trick or Read: Halloween 2009

On Halloween, Sloan Weinberg had boxes of books for all reading levels lined up on her porch, ready for the wave of trick-or-treaters to come through Buttolph Acres. As each costumed visitor approached the porch, she chose a book of the right level, helped by her husband, Andy, and her two daughters, 10-year-old Grace and seven-year-old Jade.

"As a teacher, I thought it would be a great idea to give something to promote education and came up with the idea of a book," she said.
