Patchwork: South Street gold

It is my birthday (as I write this on Monday) and I am snowed in. All I can think about is maple syrup. The days are palpably longer, and the swing between daytime and nighttime temperatures has become more dramatic. Even with the deep snow cover from this year’s winter, it has felt as if something could be stirring, but not today. It is a white out; everything is shut down.

Shoreham youth back from epic sea voyage

SHOREHAM — It’s understandable if Shoreham’s Nick Balfour is having a tougher time than usual adjusting to the spate of cold, snowy weather in Vermont this winter.

That’s because only a short time ago, the 22-year-old was among a group of 27 college students sailing the balmy equatorial Pacific on a six-week-long scientific odyssey during which, among other things, they gained a better understanding of the effects of climate change on vital marine nutrients.

Henry David Thoreau and Emily Dickinson never met in real life, but local playwright and actor Jim Stapleton has imagined what their meeting might have been like in his two-person play “Henry and Emily: The Muses in Massachusetts.” The play, which opens at the Town Hall Theater Friday night, stars Stapleton and his wife, Diana Bigelow, and includes poems and passages from published and private writings by Thoreau and Dickinson.

Tik Root and Robert Joyce, students studying at Middlebury College's school in Alexandria, explored the city on Jan. 28 and 29, just before being evacuated. They captured the pro-democracy protests and clashes between police and protesters.

Author’s note: This is the last in a second series of essays and reflections about Plato’s Laws. My concern in this essay is about an inconsistency in the Laws of Plato between idea of human freedom and the institution of slavery. I want to understand how Plato fell into it and to see if there is something to be learned from it.
