Audio Slideshow: Pocock Rocks 2011

The biggest crowd in Pocock Rocks history turned out for the third-annual music and street festival in Bristl on Saturday, June 18. Bands like The Grift and Waylon Speed cranked out thumping tunes, while various food, alocohol and craft vendors intermingled with a vibrant Addison County community, together basking in the bright June sun.

Hannaford Career Center agribusiness students are raising chickens at the north campus on Exchange St. in Middlebury. The chickens were hatched in fifth grade classrooms at Mary Hogan Elementary School before moving to the HCC. They are being raised in hoop houses built by the construction class at the HCC, which are light enough to be moved daily in order to provide a fresh patch of grass every day. The chickens are now available for pre-order, and will be slaughtered and sold on July 6.

Patchwork: Minding the gap - gardening in mid-June

I’m trying to break a bad gardening habit. I’m trying to resist the urge to over-plant, to stuff the vegetable beds to bursting point no matter how good it makes me feel.

You see, when visitors ask for a tour of my gardens, I do a lot of apologizing — for the small size of the zucchini plants, for the holes chewed in the tomatillo and cucumber leaves, for the broccoli beheaded by deer, sure, but really, I’m making excuses for the dark splotches of soil marring the beds.

THE ANNUAL MIDDLEBURY Union High School senior raft race took place last Wednesday at Lake Dunmore, and Trent Campbell was there to catch the action, the competition and the laughs. Some of the seniors didn't make it past the starting line and some emerged victorious, but all were smiling by the end.

The Vergennes Commodores faced off against the Middlebury Tigers in a Division-II quarterfinal baseball game on Friday, June 3. The Commodores defeated the Tigers 16-4 behind 5 RBIs from Charlie Stapleford and a strong pitching performance from Devin Hayes. VUHS advanced to face Missisquoi in the semifinals.
