Patchwork: Time for taking stock (and making stock)

The jars of tomato sauce, blueberry conserve, raspberry-blueberry preserve, and dried herbs line the walls of our “dark pantry,” the one that has no windows or heat, so it acts as a root cellar in the winter. Dried chamomile blossoms, dried mint, dried lemon verbena fill the jars on my tea shelf.

Video: Lincoln school tackles flooded garden

When heavy floodwaters came tearing through the mountain village of Lincoln on Sunday, Aug. 28, a group of 20 community members rescued their local elementary school garden — one of Lincoln Community School's central pillars.

Together they harvested the garden, moved the school's shed and salvaged what they could. The following week, a team of second, fifth and sixth-graders began to rebuild the beds and reflect on the recent flooding.

It is an unusual nursery school conversation. A teacher and I kneel down to where my son Charles holds his latest rendering of our family in his four-year-old fists. Four figures, one very tall (John), two medium sized (Charles and me), and one exceptionally small (the little brother), stand in front of a tall house with four windows and a front door.

Video: Panther football team tackles heavy waters

Local businesses began to take flood prevention measures on Thursday when the Otter Creek began to crest. As he watched the water rise, Chris English, co-owner of Middlebury restaurant Jackson's on the River, called the town offices for advice.

Not long after, the Middlebury College football team arrived to lend a helping hand. The team build a blockade of sandbags to keep out the river's rushing waters, then moved on to help out in other parts of town where residents were worried about flooding from Otter Creek.

The 63rd annual Addison County Fair and Field Days was last week, and the Addison Independent reporters were there with video cameras to record the action. We compiled a quick highlight reel of the fair, interspersed with fairgoers' favorite parts of the yearly Addison County tradition! During last week's 63rd annual Addison County Fair and Field Days, the #1 Auto Parts Demolition Derby was once again among the most popular events. Over the course of two nights, fans gathered to watch old junker cars — decorated with spray paint and driven with pride — continuously smash into each other until just one vehicle was still running. The event featured separate competitions for 4-cylinder, 6-cylinder and 8-cylinder engines, as well as a minivan round and a pick-up truck round. Here, sports reporter Andy Kirkaldy gives a rundown of the popular event.

Tomato season is finally here. The red (yellow, orange, if not mottled green), juicy, oozing with vitamin C, sweet but slightly acid pungent fruit is in season. And it is a fruit, not a vegetable. We just call it a vegetable.
