Vergennes Police Log: Police charge student with disorderly conduct

VERGENNES — Vergennes police on Saturday cited a Northlands Job Corps student for disorderly conduct and simple assault following a confrontation with Northlands security personnel during which the student allegedly tied to choke one security officer and spit on another.

Middlebury Police Log: Woman cited for simple assault

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police cited Shawna Renee Thorpe, 31, of Middlebury for simple assault, following an alleged incident at a Route 7 North residence on Nov. 14.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

•  Responded to a reported untimely death at a South Street Extension residence on Nov. 12. Police said the deceased — George Stabler, 69 — had died of natural causes.

•  Ticketed a Middlebury Union High School student for being a minor in possession of tobacco on campus on Nov. 12.

VSP Log: Driver fled the scene of a one-car rollover

ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont State Police were called to a one car rollover accident on Route 30 in Cornwall on Friday, Nov. 16, at around 10:13 p.m.

Upon their arrival, troopers found that the man they believed to be the driver of the 1995 Ford Mustang, 37-year-old Joshua Laraway of Bridport, had fled the scene. The passenger, 21-year-old Justin Stone of Middlebury, was transported to Porter Hospital with serious injuries. Police said he had injuries to his neck, head, back, and possibly internal; and his condition late Friday was called “guarded.”

Bristol Police Log: Man charged in multiple burglaries

BRISTOL — On Nov. 7 Bristol police arrested Chad Cook, 25, of Monkton, in connection with an ongoing burglary investigation conducted with Vermont State Police.

Cook confessed to stealing around 3,700 pounds of steel from a location in New Haven, according to Bristol Police Chief Kevin Gibbs. He said that law enforcement officials believed Cook to be one of three or four individuals responsible for a long string of burglaries from Salisbury to Burlington. As a result of the investigation, three burglary cases in Bristol village were closed.

Troopers investigate Bridport burglaries

BRIDPORT — Vermont State Police are investigating two burglaries reported off Route 125 in Bridport on Thursday, Nov. 15.

In one case, the culprit(s) forced open a rear door at the residence to get in and steal approximately $1,000 in jewelry. The thieves also initially broke a window in an unsuccessful attempt to get into the home. Damage to the door and window of the home is estimated at around $500.

Middlebury Police Log: Men charged with snorting cocaine in car

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police on Nov. 9 cited Jeffery Manshel, 21, of Weybridge and Robert F. Golden, 21, of Shoreham for possession of a felony quantity of cocaine, following an investigation on Bakery Lane.

Two Middlebury police officers were on foot patrol in the area when they walked past a station wagon and saw two men inside who appeared to be snorting something, according to authorities. Upon closer inspection, police said they saw a man in the passenger side hunched over, snorting a white powdery substance from a blade that the driver was holding.

Vermont State Police Log: Local man cited for sexual assault

ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont State Police cited Todd Clapper, 39, of Ferrisburgh, for sexual assault, for an alleged incident involving a juvenile girl in Ferrisburgh on Burroughs Farm Road on Nov. 9.

It was on that date that state police and officials with the Vermont Department of Children and Families were called to Porter Hospital to investigate a report of a girl who had been sexually assaulted.

Vergennes Police Log: Citizens volunteer help in battling drug crime

 VERGENNES — Vergennes police continue to get citizen cooperation in their efforts to fight drug crime in the city, as they received seven tips about illegal narcotic activity between Nov. 5 and 11.

Three of the tips came on one day, Nov. 8. Citizens came forward with other information twice on Nov. 6, and one time each on Nov. 7 and Nov. 10.

In incidents between Nov. 5 and 11, Vergennes police:

•  On Nov. 5 dealt with loose cows near West Main Street; police put the word out in the farm community, and the cows were collared.

Middlebury Police Log: Police investigate sexual assault charge

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police responded to a reported sexual assault involving a girl at a North Pleasant Street residence on Oct. 30. Police said the victim was examined at Porter Hospital and a report has been made to the Vermont Department of Children and Families. The matter remains under investigation, according to police.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

•  Warned a man to stop texting a local woman on Oct. 29.

•  Investigated reports of a gunshot fired in the Mead Lane area on Oct. 29.
