Act 250 case under way for proposed Bristol pit

Posted on July 1, 2010 |
By Kathryn Flagg

BRISTOL — Proceedings got under way this week to determine if a proposed Bristol gravel pit conforms with Act 250, the state’s land use and development law.

The Act 250 hearing is the latest step in a years-long dispute about the gravel pit, which, if approved, would be located on a 65-acre parcel near the Bristol town center. The proposed excavation project would take up 26 acres on that property owned by Jim Lathrop, and Lathrop’s consultants estimate the pit could produce as much as 3 million cubic yards of gravel.

BRISTOL — For one weekend in early July, the town that bills itself as the “Gateway to the Green Mountains” will become the unlikely epicenter of the hardcore punk rock music world.

Twenty bands from around the country are beating a path to Bristol, where on July 3 and 4 musicians will take the stage at the Bristol Hub Teen Center for the “Screaming for Change” music festival.

The music might sound angry, said organizer Ryan Krushenick, but it’s anything but.

Interstate rule may route traffic through Bristol

Posted on June 24, 2010 |
By Kathryn Flagg

BRISTOL — Bristol selectmen at their meeting Monday evening met with Jim Lathrop to discuss a glitch in trucking regulations on Interstate 189.

Lathrop told the board that Interstate 189, which connects Route 7 to Interstate 89 near Burlington, had been excluded from a recent decision to increase weight limits on Vermont Interstates. That means that trucks carrying heavy loads — like logging trucks or trucks hauling wood chips, as Lathrop’s business often does — cannot drive on the spur between Route 7 and I-89 without risking a ticket.
