Arts grants available to programs serving kids in 5-towns area

BRISTOL — 5-Town Friends of the Arts (5-TFA), is now accepting grant applications for its fall round of community grants.  The Community Grants program helps to fund experiences and events in the fine arts, performing arts, history, and other cultural experiences to enrich the lives of people living in Monkton, New Haven, Bristol, Lincoln and Starksboro.

Bristol Police Log: Bristol police brought in when cows got in the road

BRISTOL — On Sept. 21 at 9:50 p.m. Bristol police were called to assist Vermont State Police with a reported traffic hazard of cows in the roadway on Burpee and Plank roads.

Upon the arrival, the Bristol officer found that farm hands had rounded up the cows and removed them from the road.

Route 116 travelers should expect traffic delays due to repaving work

STARKSBORO — Motorists traveling Route 116 between Starksboro and Bristol should expect traffic delays all week, starting Sept. 25 as part of a VTrans repaving project.

This fall, VTrans will be resurfacing Route 116 on a six-and-half mile stretch between Robinson Elementary School in Starksboro and the Lord’s Prayer Rock in Bristol. Overall the project will focus on paving two layers of new pavement, cleaning the ditch lines and installing new guardrail. Following completion of work on this section, the project will close down for the winter.

Bristol's Hill wins scholarship from Agri-Mark

BRISTOL — In order to provide financial assistance to their farm family owners, Agri-Mark Family Farms typically offer 10 post-secondary education scholarships of $1,000 each.

Members of Agri-Mark farm families are encouraged to apply and are judged based on their community activities, school activities, financial need, dairy activities and career objective. The applications are judged by the three Young Cooperator Program Officers and the three program advisors, who are also members of the board of directors.

St. Ambrose spaghetti dinner to support hurricane relief on tap Sept. 29

BRISTOL — Spurred by the devastation left behind by hurricanes Harvey and Irma, the St. Ambrose Knights of Columbus are hosting a Knights in Italy spaghetti dinner on the evening of Friday, Sept. 29, from 5-7 p.m. at St Ambrose Parish Hall. The menu includes all-you-can-eat spaghetti with sauce (with or without meat), garlic bread, salad, beverages, and dessert. The cost for the meal is $10 for adults, $5 for children 12 and under, and $25 for a family.

Mount Abe still seeking schoolboard members

BRISTOL — When members of the Mount Abraham Union High School board gathered on Aug. 22 with the intent to vote on a proposed $35 million bond to renovate the school, the meeting had to be cancelled. The board lacked a quorum.

One week later the board met, with nine members present, and the proposal passed. But the delay put an exclamation point on a community concern: getting residents to serve on what is a lame-duck school board.

Bristol hires Waitsfield's Capels as its new town administrator

BRISTOL — After six and a half months of searching, Bristol has a new town administrator. Valerie Capels, Waitsfield town administrator since 2006, will take over that role in the Bristol town office on Oct. 2.

“I am attracted to Bristol because it has a reputation for good local government, engaged citizens, and a strong sense of place,” Capels said. “I am also excited for the opportunity to work for a larger community that offers a wide range of services.”

Bristol Police Log: Police respond to reported threat of self-harm

BRISTOL — At 11:37 p.m. on Aug. 30, a Bristol police officer responded to a district home where a resident had reportedly threatened self-harm and gone off into the woods.

The officer found the resident at home, upset but denying self-harm and took no further action.

In other activity Aug. 28 through Sept. 3, Bristol police:

•  Patrolled Main Street and the surrounding area on Aug. 28, 29, 30, 31 (twice), Sept. 1 (twice) and Sept. 2.
