Bristol board to delay town plan revision

BRISTOL — After pushing hard for months to advance a new draft of the Bristol Town Plan and a proposed extraction ordinance, planners in Bristol are taking the foot off the gas. With still no consensus at hand in the contentious debate over gravel mining in the town, the planning commission is saying another year could pass before the issue comes to another vote.

Bristol Act 250 hearing next week

BRISTOL — Proponents and opponents of a gravel pit near the Bristol village will meet again on Monday for an Act 250 hearing, the latest chapter of a years long fight over a proposed 26-acre excavation project off of Rounds Road.

After two separate applications for town zoning permits and several appeals to the state Environmental Court, commissioners from Rutland County will weigh in on whether or not the proposed gravel pit conforms with Act 250, the state’s Land Use and Development Act.

Interstate rule may route traffic through Bristol

BRISTOL — Bristol selectmen at their meeting Monday evening met with Jim Lathrop to discuss a glitch in trucking regulations on Interstate 189.

Lathrop told the board that Interstate 189, which connects Route 7 to Interstate 89 near Burlington, had been excluded from a recent decision to increase weight limits on Vermont Interstates. That means that trucks carrying heavy loads — like logging trucks or trucks hauling wood chips, as Lathrop’s business often does — cannot drive on the spur between Route 7 and I-89 without risking a ticket.

Closed meetings spark conversation in Bristol

BRISTOL — Concerns about the excessive use of executive sessions sparked a brief discussion about Vermont’s Open Meeting law on Monday night, when two Bristol residents pushed the town’s selectboard to limit the use of closed meetings in town affairs.

Mt. Abe takes new tack in the kitchen

BRISTOL — School officials at Mount Abraham Union High School are bucking the cost-saving trend at some Vermont schools to privatize food services, instead opting for the ambitious plan to build from scratch a homegrown cooperative that could, in time, expand to serve elementary schools in the Addison Northeast Supervisory Union.

Bristol police budget revised for July vote

BRISTOL — Bristol selectmen last week, working with Police Chief Kevin Gibbs, whittled down a police district spending plan for 2010-2011 that voters initially rejected on May 24 amid complaints about the rapidly rising cost of supporting the department.

The new cuts call for canceling the town’s contract with the Addison County Sheriff’s Department; relocating the police department after Dec. 31 to Howden Hall; and trimming overtime pay for the department’s four officers.

BRISTOL — Bristol selectman and Republican John “Peeker” Heffernan is again throwing his hat into the ring for one of two Addison-4 Vermont House seats, running on a platform devoted to maintaining Vermont’s aging infrastructure, avoiding tax increases for Vermonters, and encouraging bipartisan cooperation.

BRISTOL — The grandest entrances are usually reserved for the senior prom.

Not this year at Mount Abraham Union High School, where commencement speakers Geoff Booth and Caroline Camara roared up to the graduation stage on Saturday atop a Harley Davidson motorcycle and delivered a high-octane message to the 149 member of the class of 2010.

Grant helps Bristol with town planning

BRISTOL — The town of Bristol will continue to revise its bylaws with a $12,350 grant it received this last from the state Municipal and Regional Planning Fund. With the grant money, Bristol will partner with Smart Growth Vermont, a nonprofit organization, to incorporate as much community input as possible into the process of rewriting its bylaws. 

This year, the Municipal and Regional Planning Fund awarded a total of $347,291 to 38 towns across the state, including Vergennes. The fund, which was established in 1988, supports municipal planning and development.

Mt. Abe offering new path to students

BRISTOL — In a storefront-turned-classroom, Mount Abraham Union High School senior Jeff Casey paused mid-sentence while his classmates chuckled.

It was the end of term, and the 18-year-old was presenting his final coursework. In his case, that meant a slim folio of poems, a sketchbook filled with photographs and collages, and, in the grand finale, a short story inspired by John Updike’s “A & P.”
