Heffernan gets 33 months in jail of gun crime

BRISTOL — A Bristol man who was originally charged with attempted murder in a 2011 shooting incident that apparently revolved around a heroin deal gone bad, has pleaded guilty to a lesser charge and been sentenced to nearly three years in jail.

Dean C. Heffernan, 28, of Bristol was sentenced late last week in U.S. District Court in Rutland to 33 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release.

Bristol landmark ‘The Pillars’ to be moved to upstate New York

BRISTOL A town landmark, the Greek Revival style building on Route 116 known as “The Pillars,” is leaving Bristol for good.

Although some who have driven past the home recently have speculated that the building is being renovated, the opposite is actually true.

“It’s being deconstructed,” explained Diane Saunders, the Bristol resident who lives in another home on the property where the historic building currently stands and who used to own The Pillars with her husband, Alan.

BRISTOL — Police are considering whether a medical condition was a cause behind the incident Saturday in which a driver of an SUV crashed into a group of people — sending five to the hospital — at a children’s soccer tournament in Bristol.

Third Bristol crime forum set for Oct. 17 at MAUHS

BRISTOL — Bristol will hold its third crime forum at Mount Abraham Union High School this Wednesday, Oct. 17, from 7-9 p.m. While the last two forums, in July and September, focused on providing information to the community, the goal of the third forum is to hone in on potential steps forward. A steering committee has been formed, and met last week to plan the agenda.

SUV injures several at Bristol soccer jamboree

Authorities are investigating an incident at a soccer jamboree at Mount Abraham Union High School on Saturday, Oct 13 during which an out-of-control SUV made its way onto a playing field and injured several children. The extent of the children's injuries remained unknown as of Saturday mid-afternoon. The Independent will update this story as more details become available from police.

Bristol board OK's Eagle Scout project

BRISTOL — At its Monday meeting, the Bristol selectboard approved a town improvement project in Memorial Park proposed by Eagle Scout Taylor Allred, a senior at Mount Abraham Union High School.

In his project, Allred will clear brush and rebuild a portion of the railing system on the back side of the stream, targeting a specific area where he will replace 16 fence posts that are rotting and unstable.

Bristol officer, driver tussle at traffic stop

BRISTOL — A verbal argument between a Bristol police officer and Bristol resident David Cobb escalated to physical violence last Sunday, after Officer Josh Otey pulled over the car Cobb was driving for making an improper right-hand turn.

According to Police Chief Kevin Gibbs, Cobb questioned the officer about why he had been stopped and failed to produce a driver’s license. The two argued, and Cobb attempted to get out of his car, Gibbs recounted; when the car door opened, it struck the police officer.

Bristol eyes future of prominent gravel pit

BRISTOL — Renewed concern over the sharply angled slope of the gravel extraction sites near Mount Abraham Union High School has led to some community questions on one of Bristol’s most contentious issues — gravel pits — that could lead to discussion on how to reclaim the site.

Bristol resident David Brynn recently initiated some conversation on the subject with a letter to the editor published in the Addison Independent and with posts on a social media site.

Wanted: Spooky Bristol stories

BRISTOL — Bristol resident Elissa Cobb wants to hear a few good spooky stories about her hometown in the next few weeks, and hopes her fellow townsfolk can provide them.

Cobb, in partnership with the Bristol Historical Society, is collecting local ghost stories for a townwide Ghost Walk she is helping to organize for next month. Currently slated for Tuesday, Oct. 23, the week before Halloween, the Ghost Walk is an opportunity for kids and community members to learn about Bristol’s historic buildings in a whole new way.
