Bristol village project to wrap in near future

BRISTOL — Residents of Bristol and those who pass through the village will soon breathe a sigh of relief when driving downtown.

That’s because the construction under North and South streets that has kept portions of the roads unpaved all summer is nearing its completion a month ahead of schedule, according to town administrator Bill Bryant.

The project, which included replacing a section of the town’s stormwater system and upgrades to the water main in the downtown area, began in April and was originally scheduled to conclude in November.

Bristol lays out new tennis courts

BRISTOL — After nearly 40 years of game play, the Bristol tennis courts are finally getting a much-deserved facelift. The Bristol Recreation Club Inc. is replacing the two existing tennis courts, which were originally installed in the mid-’70s and have since been patched, re-surfaced, and re-patched.

“Our only option was to tear them out and start over,” said Jim Devall, former president of the Bristol Recreation Club and current chair of the Field Committee. Devall has helped head up the fund-raising effort for the new courts, which began eight months ago.

Lathrop appeals Bristol gravel pit Act 250 permit denial

BRISTOL — The Lathrop Limited Partnership last week appealed the denial of an Act 250 permit for its proposed Bristol gravel pit.

As a result, activity in the company’s years-long effort to get approval to extract sand and gravel from a 65-acre lot off Rounds Road in Bristol returns to the Vermont Environmental Court.

Bristol quarry denied ACT 250 permit

BISTOL — The efforts by the Lathrop Limited Partnership and Jim Lathrop to site a gravel pit on a 65-acre tract off Notch Road and Rounds Road in Bristol were dealt a setback on Tuesday when the District 9 Environmental Commission denied the project an Act 250 permit.

The commission ruled the proposal, which has been tied up in permitting and litigation for around seven years, “would cause and result in a detriment to public health, safety or general welfare.”
