New owners bringing new offerings to Rockydale Pizza

Posted on September 6, 2012 |
By Xian Chiang-Waren

BRISTOL —Rockydale Pizza’s new owners just gave a facelift to the restaurant on Rockydale Road east of Bristol village.

Co-owners David Steadman and Carla Nichols, who took the reins four weeks ago, have put in a new kitchen, updated the menu and increased their hours of service.

No changes have been made to the pizza recipes, which are old community favorites, Steadman said. But the updated menu includes some tasty new features, including homemade daily specials like stuffed green peppers, barbeque ribs and pulled pork.

Bristol tallies up cost of flood repairs

By Andrew Stein

BRISTOL — When Tropical Storm Irene slammed Vermont  a year ago, Bristol wasn’t as badly marred as some Vermont towns. But large sections of several major roads were wiped out, construction projects were taken back to phase one and several old structures were destroyed.

One year later, Bristol Administrator Bill Bryant said the town’s infrastructure and finances are in good shape. He credited the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans), among others, for aiding in the recovery.

Local kombucha company expanding in Bristol

By Andrew Stein

BRISTOL — When husband-wife duo Jeff Weaber and Katina Martin moved back to Addison County in 2005, Martin — a naturopathic physician — founded Salisbury Natural Family Health the following year.

Weaber, with his years of brewing experience in Oregon, decided to combine his and his wife’s skillsets to create a beverage high in vitamins and probiotic yeast and bacteria: kombucha, a slightly fermented tea first produced in Asia. In the autumn of 2007, the kombucha company Aqua Vitea was born in the basement of Weaber and Martin’s Salisbury home.

Bristol considers need for New Haven River floodplain

Posted on August 23, 2012 |
By Andrew Stein

BRISTOL — Since 1995, a particularly dynamic and volatile portion of the New Haven River — just south of Bristol’s A. Johnson lumber mill — has moved 400 feet west, encroaching on Route 116 and threatening numerous homes.

Kristen Underwood, a river scientist and Bristol resident, has been working on a plan to protect homes along this stretch of Route 116 for the past two years. As she’s nearing the end of her state-funded work, Underwood, Route 116 residents, the Vermont River Conservancy (VRC) and the town of Bristol have proposed a solution.

ADDISON COUNTY — Aquilino Martinez has grown his own vegetables at home in Mexico, but when he came to Addison County to work on a dairy farm, he faced some new challenges.

A new project that helps foreign-born farmworkers around the county create and maintain gardens has this summer brought some variety and a little more nutrition to Martinez’s garden.

“It helps to have a little of everything — to have variety,” the Mexican laborer said in Spanish last Thursday. “It’s something healthier.”
