When Vermont Gas Systems (VGS) turned on the spigot to its Addison Natural Gas Pipeline from Colchester to Middlebury in March 2017, it hoped eventually to deliver natural gas to more than 4,000 households, businesses and institutions in Addison County. In Bristol the company hoped to complete a distribution line by April 2019.

By the end of 2018, however, it looked possible that Bristol residents opposed to the pipeline project might have driven the company away.

Vermont Gas puts Bristol plan on hold

BRISTOL — The future of natural gas service in Bristol, which just a few months ago looked like a sure thing, has dimmed in recent weeks.

Vermont Gas Systems (VGS) informed the Vermont Public Utility Commission (PUC) on Dec. 13 that it has paused its permitting efforts for its Bristol distribution line, pending the outcome of a lawsuit filed against the town.

Organizers add spark to New Year's in Bristol

BRISTOL — Bristol Best Night organizers ordered 400 buttons for this year’s New Year’s Eve event. Then they ordered some more, just in case.

It’s going to be epic.

“This year, especially given the lack of New Year’s Eve activities in Burlington, we decided to increase our focus on the final act, with dancing until 11 p.m. with the Starline Rhythm Boys,” said Best Night organizer Eric Warren.

Car crashes slow traffic on Routes 7 and 116 in Addison County

ADDISON COUNTY — Traffic was slowed on two county roads during the Thursday morning commute by traffic crashes.

Vermont State Police responded to the two car accidents on Thursday, Dec. 20, one of which resulted in the driver being cited for driving under the influence.

The first accident, a two-vehicle collision, occurred at around 7:11 a.m. at the intersection of Route 7 and Little Chicago Road in Ferrisburgh.

Lumen lights up the streets of Bristol

Head to Bristol for the third annual Lumen Celebration of Fire & Light on Saturday, Dec. 22. Experience fire performers, a lighted walk down Main Street, and fire pits at Tandem and Vermont Tree Goods.

Fire performers Cirque de Fuego will start things off on the town green at 5 p.m. Then folks will take a lighted walk down Bristol’s Main Street to the fire pits at Tandem and Vermont Tree Goods for hot drinks, tasty eats and handmade s’mores kits from lu.lu. The night will wrap up at Hatch 31 with music and late night revelry.

New Mt. Abe facilities chief ramps up rehab

BRISTOL — When Joel FitzGerald accepted the job as facilities director of the Mount Abraham Unified School District, he knew what he was getting into. His brother has lived in the 5-Towns for more than 35 years and the second generation of FitzGeralds is about to enter its school district. In addition to making sure students are safe, warm and undistracted by their environment every day, FitzGerald would have to manage a rapidly deteriorating high school in a district where voters have three times rejected bonds to renovate it.

Bristol puts new recreation center plan on hold

BRISTOL — After months of discussion, the Bristol Recreation Community Steering Committee has voted down a plan to develop a new recreation center on the property at 76 West St., in spite of its desirable location and gateway visibility.

The steering committee was formed in September after the town of Bristol on Aug. 20 signed an agreement (contingent upon voter approval) to purchase the 0.59-acre parcel for $166,500, with an eye toward replacing the existing house with facilities that would consolidate the Recreation Department in one location.

Bristol Fire Department reappoints chief LaRose

BRISTOL — Bristol Fire Chief Brett LaRose and Deputy Fire Chief Eric Forand will lead the Bristol Fire Department for three more years.

The Bristol selectboard at its Dec. 3 meeting reappointed LaRose and Forand to new terms that will expire at the end of 2021.
