In softball, Mt. Abe tops OV, MUHS wins

ADDISON COUNTY — In local high school softball late last week Mount Abraham topped Otter Valley, a Middlebury pitcher tossed a no-hitter as the Tigers won twice to reach .500, and Vergennes remained in search of its first victory.

Lax: Tiger teams split; OV, Eagle boys lose

ADDISON COUNTY — In local high school lacrosse action in the latter half of last week, the Middlebury Union girls  and boys’ teams each split two games, while the Otter Valley and Mount Abraham-Vergennes boys came up short.

On Wednesday visiting Champlain Valley remained undefeated by topping the Tigers, 13-5. Redhawk Jake Schaefer scored four goals and set up three to pace the winners, and CVU goalie Andrew Tieso made three saves.

OV tops Mount Abe to highlight local baseball

ADDISON COUNTY — Visiting Otter Valley on Thursday continued its march through Division II high school baseball foes by coasting past host Mount Abraham Union, 16-1, in five innings.

In other baseball action late last week Otter Valley came up short at D-I Rutland, while Middlebury and Vergennes each split two games.

OTTERS TOP EAGLES

On Thursday the visiting Otters scored three two-out runs in the first and then broke the game open with big third and fourth innings on the way to a 16-1, five-inning win over the Eagles.

Bristol Police Log: New Haven River kayaker reports lost boat

BRISTOL — On April 26 Bristol police received a report from a person who lost his watercraft while kayaking in the New Haven River south of Hewitt Road.

The kayak was described as a yellow Necky Crux brand craft that is 7 feet, 9 inches long. Anyone who finds it is asked to contact Bristol police at 453-2533.

Meet Willoughby: Bristol native on tour with Caroline Rose

Bristol native Willoughby Morse has landed a plum gig.

A 2012 graduate of Mount Abraham Union High School who’s been playing in one band or another since middle school — most recently with the psych-pop band Madaila — Morse is at the moment touring and playing drums with sometime Burlington singer-songwriter Caroline Rose. Rose’s latest album, “Loner,” has put her music in the national spotlight, and now Morse along with her.

New Haven River Anglers keep fishing for fun, 37 years later

BRISTOL — It began in 1981 as a group of avid anglers looking to share their love of the sport.

It’s evolved into a diverse collection of men, women and youths who not only share the common interest in fishing, but also in preserving one of the key natural resources in which they practice their sport.

It’s the New Haven River Anglers Association (NHRAA), which recently celebrated its 37th birthday.

Bristol teen is following his soccer dream

COLUMBUS, Ohio — By the time he was 16, Bristol native Francis Nardiello Smith had played for four regional and two national soccer teams in the Olympic Development Program.

“They called him ‘The Mayor,’” said Hugh Brown, Nardiello Smith’s coach at Burlington-based Synergy Football Club. “Francis always went out of his way to make sure the other players were doing OK. He made sure they were eating well. He would actually go around and hand out fruit.”

It was the same on the practice field.

Teacher's leave-of-absence case highlights changes at Bristol schools

BRISTOL — Bridget Nardiello is taking a leap she never thought she’d have to take.

After teaching 15 years at Bristol Elementary School, the Bristol resident applied for an unpaid leave of absence so she could be with and support her son, Francis, during his senior year (2018–19) 700 miles away at a high school in Ohio, where he is playing highly competitive soccer. Bristol officials consider natural gas survey

BRISTOL — Bristol residents may soon get a chance to weigh in — officially — on a proposed Vermont Gas project that would bring natural gas service to the town.

On Monday night the Bristol selectboard continued a discussion that had begun at its April 16 meeting, about whether or not it was possible, or desirable, to conduct a survey of town residents to determine their interest in signing up for gas service.

“Nothing was agreed, but it was a good discussion,” said Town Administrator Valerie Capels.
